Sports Medicine Services

We offer numerous services at the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Center at MedStar Harbor Hospital, including:

Diagnostic Tools, including Musculoskeletal Ultrasounds

For patients with musculoskeletal injuries that cannot be seen, such as a muscle tear, a musculoskeletal ultrasound can help physicians accurately diagnose the problem and identify the best treatment options. Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body and can provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissue.

With no radiation exposure, a musculoskeletal ultrasound is safe, accurate, and efficient for both patients and physicians.

Fracture Care

Fracture care treatment is different for each individual and depends on the extent of the fracture. Treatment can range from a special shoe or cast to surgery for more severe fractures. A surgeon may use plates, metal or absorbable screws, pins, staples, or tension bands to hold the bones in place. Physical therapy is the second stage of treatment for a fracture, following the cast removal or surgery.

Golf Enhancement Program

The golf performance evaluation is a comprehensive physical examination performed by a licensed physical therapist specializing in a synthesis of information from Back to Golf©, Kinetic Golf© and Body Balance for Performance ©. Our therapists are experienced in sports-specific training programs, functional stabilization, conditioning, and kinesiology. They also have experience treating golf-related injuries and in rehabilitating athletes of all performance levels.

Evaluations include video motion analysis, testing, and measurements of:

• Posture
• Balance
• Flexibility
• Strength
• Core stability
• Conditioning

The information gathered from the evaluation is used to design a customized, golf-specific physical training program that will optimize strength and improve the physical characteristics necessary to swing a golf club properly. The goal of the Enhancement Program is to achieve maximum distance, accuracy, control, and scoring potential while decreasing injury risk.

Treatment and follow-up visits are based on the findings of the performance evaluation and the golfer's goals. All participants receive a golf-specific individualized home exercise program. Other treatments may include myofascial release, joint mobilization, stretching, core stabilization, functional stability training, strengthening, and cardiovascular conditioning.

We bring the latest research in training and injury prevention to the golfing community. In addition to individual evaluations performed in the clinic, we also give educational presentations to teams and golfing groups.

Orthotics devices worn in the shoe can re-align a person's foot and reduce some of the injuries that begin at the foot and travel upward. Because the feet are the body's main shock absorbers, a number of injuries and conditions can arise when they are compromised. If used properly, orthotics can absorb the shock, reducing the risk of injury. MedStar Harbor offers semi-custom orthotic services for adults, adolescents, and children.

Personal and Athletic Training

At MedStar Harbor Hospital, we take a balanced approach to fitness by developing a customized exercise program designed to meet your specific needs and goals. Many of our clients have medical issues, and we highly encourage them to continue exercising following discharge from therapy to achieve better health.

MedStar Harbor trainers are certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and have experience working with a wide range of physical limitations that restrict clients' ability to exercise.

Tendon Reconstruction

Tendon reconstruction is a treatment employed to repair tendon tears. For less severe tears, suturing may suffice. If you have an acute tear, your physician will use tendon tissue grafts, taken either from elsewhere in the leg or from a tissue bank, to make the repair.
