About me
Lambros Stamatakis, MD, joined the MedStar Washington Hospital Center in May 2015 and now serves as the director of Urologic Oncology. He is also an associate professor of Urology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
He is interested in the diagnosis and management of malignant diseases of the urologic system, including the bladder, kidney, prostate, and testis. He also treats patients with upper tract obstruction/strictures, urinary diversions, BPH, kidney stones, and other urologic conditions. His surgical expertise includes the ability to perform open, endoscopic, and minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) urologic procedures.
Dr. Stamatakis was born and raised in Ellicott City, Maryland. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, where he studied biology and religious studies. Dr. Stamatakis subsequently attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He then moved to Houston, Texas, where he completed his urologic residency and fellowship in endourology/minimally invasive surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine. He then returned to the National Cancer Institute, where he completed an internationally recognized fellowship in urologic oncology.
When not working, Dr. Stamatakis enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.
Philosophy of Care
We have entered the era of personalized medicine, where "one size doesn't fit all" in terms of management options, surgical approaches, and patient preferences.
I provide individualized state-of-the-art urologic oncologic care using minimally-invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques when appropriate. But surgery may just be one component of our care patients with complex cancers of the genitourinary tract often require attack from multiple fronts. In such cases, I will help to coordinate a team approach by engaging our expert partners in medical and radiation oncology, as well as pathology, behavioral health, and social services, thus providing comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care to our patients and optimizing their outcomes. When appropriate, clinical trials may be offered to provide patients with cutting-edge options that are not available in community practice settings.
My goal is not only to be a physician and surgeon for my patients, but also to be a trusted advocate throughout the course of their care.
