Applicant information

Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center Department of Dermatology Residency Program prepares physicians for the complex and challenging demands of a dermatology practice. Our application process is one that is a more holistic look at the total applicant reviewed by the Recruiting Committee.

For the 2024 ERAS cycle, our program will be participating in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional. You will have a chance to “signal” your program preferences and this will be a good way to let us know your specific interest in us.

All applicants must apply and submit supporting documents through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)

 

  • How many positions will you have for the 2024-2025 academic year?

    We will have 2 PGY-2 Categorical Dermatology positions and 2 PGY 1 Internal Medicine- Dermatology positions. You MUST successfully complete a preliminary year in an ACGME- accredited training program by June 30, 2023, to be eligible for our Categorical Dermatology program.

  • Do you accept applications outside of Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS)? What is the deadline for applications?

    No, all applicants MUST apply through ERAS. Our deadline (currently) is September 26, 2023.

  • Do you participate in The MATCH? What is the deadline to submit my Match List?

    Yes, we participate in The MATCH for all of our PGY2 and PGY 1 positions. All applicants need to register for The MATCH through ERAS. The deadline for submitting your Match List to the NRMP is typically late February. For further information about this process, you can to the NRMP website (http://www.nrmp.org/applicant-registration/).

  • What are your requirements for the USMLE Step exams?

    Step 2 will be required for the 2023-2024 application cycle. IMG applicants, see additional information on the USMLE Exam in the separate IMG section below.

  • Will your program have in-person or virtual interviews?

    Our will program will be doing virtual interviews for the 2023-2024 application cycle.

  • Do applicants from an osteopathic medical program need to take the USMLE, the COMPLEX or both?

    Our program accepts only the USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2.

  • Do you have any specific requirements for letters of recommendation?

    We require 3 letters which MUST be submitted as part of the overall ERAS application. Letters should be from individuals with whom the applicant has worked closely and can speak to the applicant’s qualification for residency. The MSPE does not count as a reference letter. A 4th letter will be accepted but is not a requirement.

  • Do you consider International Medical Graduates (IMG)?

    Yes, with the additional considerations below.

  • Does the program accept J1 visas?

    Yes, applicants who are not U.S. Citizens or green card holders must be ECFMG-certified and eligible to apply for the appropriate visa before beginning a residency at Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center Department of Dermatology Residency Program.

    J1 Visa- This visa is sponsored by ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). J-1 holders are required to return to their home country after the completion of training for two years before they can return to the U.S. The application process takes approximately 6-8 weeks. The applicant is responsible for paying all fees associated with the J-1 visa.

  • Does Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center Department of Dermatology sponsor H1 visas?

    No.

  • Is the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate required at the time of application?

    Yes, a copy of the certificate MUST be included as part of the ERAS application process.
