The emergency medicine residency program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, in collaboration with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Georgetown University School of Medicine, was established in July 2006 and is a three-year, ACGME-accredited training program emphasizing pediatrics, critical care and trauma management.
The program's vision is to produce exceptional and compassionate emergency physicians who are capable of responding to urgent needs for medical care with speed, skill, efficiency and confidence. Our goal is to train the next generation of leaders in academic and community emergency medicine.
Clinical training occurs in a variety of settings in the D.C. metropolitan area. The ability to treat a diverse patient population served by different types of institutions (urban, suburban, tertiary care, primary care, academic medical centers, community hospital) guarantees an exciting, challenging and rewarding training experience.
The majority of our residents' training takes place at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. MedSTAR (Medical Shock Trauma Acute Resuscitation) at Washington Hospital Center is a Level I Trauma Center and a regional resource for the transport and treatment of patients with a wide spectrum of critical illnesses and injuries. The Burn Center at MedStar Washington is the only adult burn treatment center in the Washington metropolitan area and features a multidisciplinary team specially trained to provide comprehensive care for burn victims.
Other training sites include:
- MedStar Georgetown University Hospital
- Children's National Medical Center
- Inova Fairfax Hospital
- Shady Grove Adventist Hospital
- R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
