Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) Residency Program

MedStar Washington Hospital Center's residency training program is unique in three major ways. First, it is a residency program that matches a high volume of clinical experience with close instruction by attending faculty. Residents have exposure to a wide variety of gynecologic pathology and high-risk obstetrics in the context of a balanced teaching and service environment.

Second, the program is focused on meeting the needs and requests of its trainees. As such, residents play an integral role in structuring the didactic and clinical curriculum in which they learn. Finally, MedStar Washington combines all of the benefits of an intimate community training program with the resources of a major urban academic medical center.

As an independent program, we have the flexibility to mold an individual resident's experience to his or her needs. At the same time, we have the resources of our own departmental full-time faculty in addition to the faculty of the other 22 Hospital Center–based residency programs as well as the research faculty of the MedStar Health Research Institute.

The curriculum is designed to meet the training objectives of the Council on Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. As such, the program provides ample opportunities for residents to achieve the knowledge, skills, and behaviors essential to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, and to the delivery of ambulatory primary health care for women.

The training provides residents experience in all areas of women's health, and prepares them for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology examination. Since 1997, the program has had a high pass rate on the written ABOG exam.
