Become an Emergency Medicine Physician | MedStar Health

World-class emergency medicine

MedStar Emergency Physicians is a talented group of aligned physicians and physician assistants across MedStar Health who are highly trained, providing emergency care to patients of all ages. Our clinicians collectively evaluate and treat a wide variety of illnesses and injuries, including general medical and surgical conditions in adults and children, as well as trauma and burn care.

MedStar Emergency Physicians is comprised of nine top-tier emergency departments (EDs) in the mid-Atlantic region. The team includes more than 300 board-certified emergency clinicians, both physicians and physician assistants, who care for more than 440,000 patients annually.

MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP) is home to the Georgetown/MedStar Washington Hospital Center Emergency Medicine Residency program and several fellowship programs for emergency medicine graduates in Sports Medicine, Emergency Ultrasound, Medical Simulation (SIM), Health Policy, and Telehealth. MEP's newest department, MedStar Acute Care Coordination Center (MAC3) functions completely virtually, offering a variety of services including tele-triage for ED patients, evaluate, treat, discharge for low-acuity patients, and tele-consults with MedStar Health Urgent Care. MEP is operationally linked to MedStar Transport, a robust ground and aviation patient transport network.

Our commitment to stabilizing and improving the health of our patients is a priority. We provide compassionate and personalized care, treating patients when they are experiencing a health emergency.

Our guiding principles

The provision of emergency medical care is a sacred trust. Our patients are acutely ill, injured, and vulnerable.

Patients who seek emergency care place their total well-being and trust in the hands of people they do not know. Those people are us.

It is our responsibility to place our patients first, to act always in their best interest, to provide them with the highest quality medical care, and to treat our patients as we wish to be treated.

Our purpose

  • To provide the highest standard of competent, compassionate, and timely emergency medical care to all of our patients .
  • To be a center for innovation and excellence in the practice of emergency medicine.
  • To educate and train both the current and the next generation of emergency care providers .
  • To serve as the ultimate medical safety net for our community .
  • To be a leader within the institution for patient-centered care.

Who we are

We recruit only residency trained, board certified/eligible emergency physicians and many of our emergency physicians are former Chief Residents of their respective residency programs. Our physicians are proud to be part of a world-class department, seeking out opportunities to improve the care delivered to our patients, the department, the hospital, the communities we serve, and the specialty of emergency medicine.

Our physicians provide exceptional emergency care to over 440,000 patients annually and facilitate more than 110,000 hospital admissions each year. Our program is fully committed and its members of the medical staff are integrated into each hospital we serve; committed teachers of healthcare professionals; avid supporters of the hospital’s community service commitments; and participants in the fabric of hospital life.

Reducing risks

We have developed our own Risk Reduction Core Curriculum program that highlights 12 high-risk areas related to clinical care and patient safety.

  • Members of our team have partnered with the MedStar Institute for Innovation to utilize human factors engineering in clinical care delivery to reduce adverse events and improve outcomes.
  • We partner with providers outside of MedStar Emergency Physicians through the MedStar Emergency Medicine Clinical Practice Council to share best practices and implement cutting-edge safety tools that will improve outcomes and reduce risk.
  • We are focused on carrying out MedStar Health’s patient safety initiatives, such as reducing central line associated bloodstream infections through education, training, and provider-specific feedback.

Commitment to education

Our goal is to serve as a nationally recognized leader in academic excellence in the specialty through teaching, scholarship, innovation, leadership, and unwavering commitment to service at the local, regional, and national levels. MedStar Emergency Physicians supports a nationally recognized Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program with a total of 30 residents. The three-year training program graduates 10 residents per year, with well over 100 graduates since its inception. Nearly 40% of our residency program graduates continue their careers within MedStar Health emergency departments following program completion.

MedStar Emergency Physicians also offers fellowship training in Emergency Ultrasound, Sports Medicine, Simulation & Patient Safety in collaboration with MedStar SiTEL and MedStar’s National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, as well as fellowship training in Health Care Policy in partnership with the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. MedStar Emergency Physicians was nationally recognized in 2019-2020 by the Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management for being an “Employer of Excellence.”
