Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Orientation Session at MedStar Georgetown

What is MBSR?

MBSR is an evidence-based eight week course that teaches participants skills to reduce physical and emotional stress, and enhance day-to-day well-being. Created in the late 1970’s by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, MBSR has been shown to be effective at helping participants with a wide variety of needs, goals and physical conditions reduce stress, pain, anxiety and other symptoms, and improve their quality of life. This course consists of eight two and a half hour weekly classes (Note: first class is 3 hours, and last class is 3.5 hours) and one day-long (7 hour) retreat on a weekend.

How to Enroll

There are four steps to enroll in the MBSR class at MedStar Georgetown: 

  1. Register by completing the online registration form
  2. Attend an orientation session (see dates, below)
  3. Brief individual interview with a course instructor
  4. Send payment by check payable to MGUH-GUPA to:

Introduction to Mindfulness/MBSR Orientation Sessions

These orientation sessions (1.5 hours free of charge) are an experiential introduction to mindfulness, and at the same time, provide a detailed overview of the course.  They are designed equally for those who are curious about MBSR and seek information to help them decide, as well as for those who already are certain that they want to enroll, as an introduction and orientation.

Tuesday Evening Class:

  • Dates: March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 4, 11, 18, 25
  • Times: 6 – 8:30 p.m. (Please Note: 1st class on March 7 is 3 hours; 6-9 p.m., and last class, April 25, is 3.5 hours, 6-9:30 p.m.)
  • All Day Retreat: Saturday, April 8 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Wednesday Morning Class:

  • Dates: Mar 8, 15, 22, 29; Apr 5, 12, 19, 26
  • Times: 11 am – 1:30 p.m. (note all 8 classes are at the same times)
  • All Day Retreat: Saturday, April 8 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
