FAQ: Annual MedStar Philanthropy Campaign

What is the purpose of the Annual MedStar Philanthropy Campaign?

Giving: The Power to Heal offers associates and physicians an opportunity to support the care our hospital provides to patients, their families and our community. This campaign creates awareness about philanthropy and how it impacts the work we all do. The campaign also helps to build the culture of gratitude. We all have the opportunity to make a difference through our compassionate care and our expertise. While we may not all be able to save a life directly, we can all make an impact advocating for philanthropy or choosing to give back.

What is Philanthropy?

In the simplest definition, philanthropy is the love of humankind. Across MedStar, gratitude and philanthropy go hand in hand. When patients and their families are grateful for the care they have received and want to make a difference for patients in the future, they are a part of philanthropy. At MedStar, our associates play a vital role in philanthropy—understanding how it can impact the hospital in positive ways and what to do when patients express gratitude and the desire to want to say thank you by offering a philanthropic investment.

Why Did the Name of the Campaign Change?

It is important to understand that philanthropy is not just about us giving to the hospital. As we continue to build a culture of gratitude, it is important to educate associates and physicians that they can make an impact, not just by giving back, but also by advocating for philanthropy, understanding the impact it makes on the hospital and speaking positively about the important connections between philanthropy, gratitude and healing.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are a few ways you can get involved with Giving: The Power to Heal.

  1. Consider serving on the volunteer committee at your hospital. It’s a fun way to plan activities during the campaign and to meet new people in your hospital.
  2. Become an advocate for philanthropy. When you sign up to be an advocate you are recognized as someone who understands what philanthropy is, how it impacts your hospital and what to do when you or a colleague see expressions of gratitude from patients or families.
  3. Consider investing in the mission of your hospital. By giving back you are not only expressing your support for the care we provide, but you are investing in the future of our organization. Every gift matters and no gift is too small to make an impact.

Why is Participation in This Campaign Important?

Every MedStar Health entity has a special culture with an emphasis on philanthropy. Participation in Giving: The Power to Heal isn’t just about making a gift. You can show your support in a variety of ways, including becoming an advocate. Participation in the campaign is a unique way for associates to demonstrate that they believe in and support MedStar’s mission of delivering exceptional patient-first health care through the latest medical advances and excellence in patient care, education and research.

How is My Contribution Used?

Your philanthropic investment in our hospital stays here, where it is used to support programs which deliver excellent and compassionate care that our community deserves. Your gift is another way to show concern for the people who look to us for healing and for hope in some of the most important moments of their lives. Whether celebrating the birth of a child, finishing a final day of cancer treatment or taking the first step after joint replacement, our patients can rely on the fact that we will be here and ready to help them when they need us. Thank you for all that you do to keep us ready to serve.
