What is philanthropy?

In the simplest definition, philanthropy is the love of humankind. Across MedStar, gratitude and philanthropy go hand in hand. When patients and their families are grateful for the care they have received and want to make a difference for patients in the future, they are a part of philanthropy.

At MedStar, our associates play a vital role in philanthropy—understanding how it can impact the hospital in positive ways and what to do when patients express gratitude and the desire to want to say thank you by offering a philanthropic investment.


Why is participation in this campaign important?

Every MedStar Health entity has a special culture with an emphasis on philanthropy.
Participation in the 2016 Power to Heal Campaign isn’t just about making a gift. You can show your support in a variety of ways, including becoming an advocate for gratitude and philanthropy. Participation in the campaign is a unique way for associates to demonstrate that they believe in and support MedStar’s mission of delivering exceptional patient-first health care through the latest medical advances and excellence in patient care, education and research.


How is my contribution used?

You can choose how your philanthropic investment will be used by selecting a 2016 Power to Heal Fund. For the first time, Power to Heal Campaign Committees across the system have collaborated with leadership to identify projects that will receive support from the campaign. 100% of your tax-deductible gift will go toward the Power to Heal Fund of your choice.

“I am currently giving to the hospital, institute or entity—do I need to complete a new form for this year’s campaign?”

Yes, the Power to Heal Campaign is annual and a new form must be completed each year.


How will payroll deduction work?

All payroll deduction pledge payments begin January 13, 2017 and will occur for either 26 or 24 pay period in 2017 - whichever is applicable to you. You will be able to view the deduction amount on your paystub as well as your year-to-date contribution.
