About me

Gayle Balba, MD, is a board-certified Infectious Disease specialist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and an assistant professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. At MedStar Georgetown, she serves as director of the Hepatitis Clinic, Division of Infectious Diseases. Under her leadership, the clinic provides state-of-the-art clinical care for patients with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus; training of infectious diseases fellows; and research programs in infectious diseases. Dr. Balba is also the program training director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship. Her research interests are in medical education, and she is currently investigating the role of social media in faculty mentorship of medical students.

Dr. Balba has participated as an investigator on several hepatitis studies. She is the principal investigator at the Georgetown site for the National Institutes of Health-funded AIDS clinical trials group, studying the use of Boceprevir in the treatment of patients co-infected with HIV and hepatitis C. The DC Developmental Center for AIDS Research has awarded her a grant to conduct FibroScan® research. Additionally, she is a subinvestigator on more than 15 clinical studies of HIV.

Dr. Balba has several publications in the field of HIV, including an article on ocular syphilis in HIV-infected patients and an article reporting the first case of etravirine-induced hypersensitivity reaction and fulminant hepatitis. She was recently invited to write a review on BK virus in renal transplant recipients, which was published in Infectious Disease Clinics of North America.

Dr. Balba is an active member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Greater Washington Infectious Diseases Society. She also is an active member of the Infection Prevention Program and Antibiotic Utilization Committees at MedStar Georgetown.
