Why train here

The program is designed to ensure training in the full range of interventional radiology practice, with extensive procedural, clinical, and consultative experience.

The Interventional Radiology training program is completed at two large and respected D.C. area hospitals with unique areas of specialization:

  • Interventional oncology
  • Hepatobiliary interventions
  • Peripheral arterial and venous interventions
  • Genitourinary interventions and men’s and women’s health interventions

Academic excellence

Among the first IR programs to gain ACGME approval, educating the next generation of interventional radiologists, providing comprehensive clinical education to prepare residents for careers in academia or private practice.

The faculty includes national leaders in uterine embolization, TACE, radioembolization, portal venous interventions, and peripheral arterial disease.

Recent graduates have earned academic appointments at Georgetown University, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Ochsner Health, University of Maryland, and University of California, Irvine. Others have joined thriving private practices in Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and California, to name a few—a testament to a strong alumni network and national reputation for excellence.

Curriculum

The residency is designed to train interventional radiologists in the full range of practice, with extensive procedural, clinical, and consultative experience.

The program is open to those who have completed a diagnostic radiology residency. Applicants who have obtained early specialization in IR (ESIR) during diagnostic radiology training are eligible for the one-year Independent IR Residency. Other applicants with diagnostic radiology residency training are eligible for the two-year Independent IR Residency.

The program includes a designated preliminary surgical year at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, followed by three years of diagnostic radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

The final two years of the residency will be spent in IR- related rotations at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and its affiliates.

Both training locations have dedicated outpatient interventional radiology clinics, allowing residents to work with patients pre- and post-procedure. Most residents will spend approximately half a day per week in the IR clinic.

The program includes rotations focused on:

  • General IR
  • ICU
  • Hepatology and oncology
  • Peripheral arterial interventions
  • Aortic interventions
