Neurosurgery at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center: Personalized Care

Eight out of 10 Americans experience neck or back pain during their lives. Yet many individuals choose to live with their conditions out of fear of facing surgery. So they suffer needlessly. It doesn’t have to be that way.

If you are dealing with a painful neck or back condition, where you go for care makes a big difference.

At MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, our respected board-certified neurosurgeons and neuroscientists are specialists in evaluating, diagnosing and treating both common and rare neurological conditions and diseases—many of which are the source of debilitating pain.

Our philosophy of care centers on the treatment of each individual's symptoms, with a focus on recapturing the patient's quality of life. Before considering surgery, we carefully evaluate each patient to determine if there are other approaches that can be effective in relieving pain.

Many patients can be successfully treated through nonsurgical techniques. If surgery is necessary, options include innovative procedures, such as minimally invasive surgery, which requires smaller incisions and typically results in a faster recovery.

Our experts achieve the best outcomes not just because of groundbreaking procedures, but because of decades of experience.

Conditions We Treat

Here at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, our specialists use a team approach to effectively treat some of the region’s most common and complex disorders of the brain and spine—offering new options and hope to our patients.

We employ a personalized strategy that starts with an assessment of each patient’s unique condition and circumstances to determine the most appropriate intervention for that individual. A treatment plan is then developed to address the patient’s specific needs so they can regain and maintain optimum health.

Our specialists diagnose and treat conditions such as:

  • Back and Spine Conditions
  • Herniated Disks
  • Myelopathy (compression of the spinal cord)
  • Radiculopathy (pinched nerves)
  • Scoliosis (abnormal spine curvature)
  • Spondylolisthesis (slippage of one vertabra over another)
  • Spondylosis (instability of the vertebral column)
  • Stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal, causing pain)

Treatments We Offer

Different kinds of pain respond to different kinds of treatment. Once our experts understand and diagnose your pain, they focus on treating your condition, often using a combination of approaches that will meet your individual needs.

  • Physical Therapy: Heat or ice applications, massage, and strengthening exercises.
  • Epidural Steroid Injections: Anti-inflammatory and anesthetic medications that decrease swelling and the pain associated with it.
  • Nerve Root Blocks: Injections to block the nerve that's causing the pain.
  • Radio Frequency Ablation: Heating a nerve to eliminate its function to stop the pain.
  • Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy: Inserting a heated needle into a painful disk to eliminate the pain receptors.

Our experts have extensive training using the most advanced surgical techniques for treating a wide range of neurological disorders, many of which require highly specialized skills. Together, we determine the source of your pain and treat it as effectively as possible.

During minimally invasive techniques, our surgeons make a small incision and use advanced computer technology and specialized instruments to repair back and spine conditions.

In microscopic surgery, we combine minimally invasive techniques with highly sensitive, cutting-edge surgical microscopes to access even the most delicate areas with precision.

Traditional fusion surgery merges the vertebrae, which relieves pain and pressure, but also restricts the ability to move. Motion-sparing spinal surgery gives you the best of both worlds—it relieves pressure on your spinal cord and preserves your range of motion.

The unique spine care program at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center works closely with talented physical therapists from MedStar National Rehabilitation Network on a variety of treatments to obtain the best outcomes. Our rehabilitation services include:

  • Back School: A group program designed to educate individuals to take control of their neck and/or back pain.
  • Aquatic Therapy: Using the qualities of water and heat to decrease pain and swelling and to increase movement. The pool is heated and handicapped accessible.
  • Manual Therapy: Massage, mobilization of joints, and more.
  • Exercise: The development of an individualized exercise plan to stretch or strengthen appropriate muscles.

“My Montgomery put back pain behind me.”

Before back pain, Susan was always active—hiking, skiing or playing tennis. But the pain got so bad, it forced her to walk hunched over—for five years. She tried cortisone shots, acupuncture and physical therapy, but nothing worked for long.

A friend referred Susan to MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, where they performed a spinal fusion that immediately relieved her pain. Today, she’s standing tall and looking forward to restarting her active life.

With a focus on all areas of health care, MedStar Montgomery Medical Center has the skillful, caring specialists to help you through it all.
