Our state-of-the-art renovations were designed with your needs in mind
At MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, we’re proud to present our expanded and renovated front entrance and Emergency Department (ED). As our community has grown, we have too. In fact, we’ve added 18 thousand square feet of treatment space in our ED for a total of 70 thousand square feet, making this the largest renovation and expansion project in the history of our hospital.
We’ve thought through every detail to ensure our finished space reflects the feedback of our community. Our spacious layout is equipped to provide you with the best care, featuring:
- 50% more treatment rooms than before
- Two large trauma and resuscitation rooms built to hold more equipment and providers
- Special Pathogens Assessment Center
- On-site imaging technology for faster, more convenient testing
- Dedicated behavioral health space
- Larger rooms to more comfortably accommodate visitors
- Modern reception areas
- A café conveniently located in the front lobby

The same expert emergency care you know in a modernized environment
In our renovated and expanded ED, you’ll find the same board-certified physicians, experienced physician assistants, and emergency nurses and technicians who remain dedicated to caring for unexpected illness and injury. Our facility is equipped to deliver rapid, life-saving care for heart attack and stroke through seamless coordination with the hospital’s award-winning Stroke Center. We also offer exceptional emergency treatment for other severe conditions, including:
- Trauma
- Signs of heart attack or stroke
- Suspected poisoning or drug overdose
- Extreme emotional distress, including suicidal or homicidal feelings
- High blood pressure
- Diabetic emergencies
- Surgical emergencies
- Gastrointestinal Bleeding
- Respiratory distress
Where to find us
The emergency department is now located adjacent to the enhanced main entrance located in the front of the hospital.
Patient drop-off: Patients and loved ones may be dropped off at the Emergency Department entrance using the main roundabout in front of the hospital.
Parking: Free parking is available directly in front of the main hospital building.
