Philosophy of Care
Dr. Alexandros D. Powers' philosophy of care centers on the treatment of each individual patient's symptoms, with a focus on recapturing a patient's quality of life. Many patients can be successfully treated through nonsurgical techniques.

Dr. Powers collaborates with rehabilitation and physical therapy specialists throughout the mid-Atlantic region to exhaust all measures of treatment before considering surgery. If a patient does not respond to conservative treatments, he will present all applicable surgical techniques and recovery expectations in order to ensure the patient is comfortable with their decision.

Dr. Powers has been performing minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) for over 15 years. He often utilizes the MISS approach to spinal surgery. This approach offers the patient a small(er) incision and muscle preservation, as well as a shorter recovery time. Dr. Powers is also well-regarded in the spinal instrumentation industry as a key contributor in the research and development of spinal instrumentation, including motion preservation instrumentation.
Dr. Powers graduated cum laude in 1981 from the University of Pittsburgh with majors in chemistry, physics and mathematics. He attended medical school at Hahnemann University Hospital, now affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine, and completed his surgical internship at the Guthrie Clinic, Robert Packer Hospital.

Dr. Powers completed his neurosurgical residency at The George Washington University Hospital; training included adult and pediatric neurosurgery, cranial and spinal surgery, neuroradiology and neuropathology. He completed his residency in 1992 and was awarded the Hugo V. Rizzioli award for Excellence in Neurosurgery.
Dr. Powers has once again been recognized as a "Top Doctor" in the November 2016 issue of the Washingtonian. He has been recognized a total of nine times and on the cover of the Washingtonian in 2012. The Top Doctors list recognizes medical professionals in DC, Maryland, and Virginia for excellence, as measured by the trust they have earned from their peers the previous year.
