About the Provider

Caren Sabina Palese, MD is an assistant professor of gastroenterology at Georgetown University Medical Center. She is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Dr. Palese completed her undergraduate studies at Princeton University and received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine, followed by a three-year gastroenterology fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center.

In 2013, Washington Post Magazine named Dr. Palese as a SuperDoc Rising Star. In 2014, Washingtonian magazine named her to their Top Doctors list.

Dr. Palese uses progressive techniques to diagnose and treat many esophageal disorders, such as GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis and Barrett's esophagus. Complex GI tract conditions can be difficult to diagnosis. Dr. Palese listens to her patients in order to select the best treatment approach.

For trouble swallowing and chest discomfort, she uses progressive technology for careful evaluation, including the Bravo wireless capsule for pH testing for possible reflux disease. She employs high resolution esophageal manometry to measure the pressure and movement of the esophagus and impedance pH testing to test for regurgitation of fluids. Dr. Palese also performs Barrx, a radiofrequency ablation treatment technique for Barrett's esophagus.

For the most effective care and optimal outcomes for her patients, she takes a multidisciplinary approach and often works closely with a team of specialists.
In addition to her expertise in swallowing disorders, Barrett's esophagus and gastrointestinal motility disorders, Dr. Palese performs precise screening colonoscopies for detecting colon cancer and flat polyps.

Beyond her passion for her work, Dr. Palese enjoys speaking German and Spanish, running and skiing.
