About the Provider

Chandni Kalaria, MD, is an attending vascular neurologist in the Department of Neurology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and an assistant professor in the department of neurology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. As a stroke specialist, Dr. Kalaria specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic stroke, including the treatment of acute ischemic stroke emergencies, inpatient stroke care, and outpatient follow-up.

As comprehensive stroke centers, MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital are able to offer acute stroke treatments to patients who present early, such as the use of alteplase (tPA). Dr. Kalaria and the other vascular neurologists combine their expertise with interventional radiology and neurosurgery to treat certain patients with clot removal (embolectomy). Specially trained nurses, therapists, and staff continue to care for these stroke patients to try and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Dr. Kalaria’s clinical interests include enhancing acute stroke systems of care. She is also interested in stroke education and is actively involved in educating departments throughout the hospital about stroke recognition and care. Dr. Kalaria works closely with stroke fellows as well as residents and students.
She currently participates in ongoing stroke research trials at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, such as the NIH Natural History Trial and the SHINE trial, enrolling patients to participate. She is passionate about capturing more patients in the early stroke phase who may be eligible for treatments. Dr. Kalaria believes that community education will encourage patients to seek care early on, allowing more patients to receive stroke treatments that could reduce their stroke burden. She has participated in local blood pressure drives and phone banks to help educate the local community about stroke.

Dr. Kalaria received her medical degree from Augusta University - Medical College of Georgia before completing a one-year training in preliminary medicine at Vidant Medical Center. She then joined the University of Maryland Medical Center for a three-year residency in neurology and a one-year specialty fellowship in vascular neurology. During her residency, she published a book chapter on hypercoagulable states in stroke.

Quality care improvement projects have constituted another part of Dr. Kalaria’s work. As a medical student she volunteered at the Physician Training Partnership in Haydom, Tanzania, where she taught neurologic examinations to clinical officers at Haydom Hospital and created patient education materials about neurosurgical care.  She continues to work on projects to improve patient care and education.

The field of vascular neurology is expanding rapidly, and Dr. Kalaria is excited about new advancements to the field. She works with a highly-skilled and trained team of practitioners who are all committed to keeping up with these advancements and bringing the best stroke care to the community.

Philosophy of Care

“I treat patients how I would want to be treated. I like for patients and families to have a strong role in how they are clinically managed. I want all my patients and their families to fully understand what has happened to them and to understand what they can do to improve their health going forward.”
