Dr. Douglas Van Nostrand, MD
- Nuclear Medicine (Primary); board certifiedin 1978
Douglas Van Nostrand, MD, is director of Nuclear Medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where he sees patients.
Dr. Van Nostrand has special expertise in diagnosing, scanning and treating thyroid cancer patients. Patients come to this facility from all over the world. During any week, he and his staff see more patients with thyroid cancer than in any hospital in the U.S.—which results in higher quality images and more precise treatments.
He believes that "a better-educated patient will have a better outcome." Toward that goal, he is careful to educate patients about thyroid cancer. Also, every patient views a 20-minute video about radioiodine imaging, therapy and side effects—as well as a six-step instruction manual. Dr. Van Nostrand also offers each patient a complimentary copy of his book: Thyroid Cancer: A Guide for Patients.
Dr. Van Nostrand and his staff are very aggressive in minimizing side effects of radioiodine treatments, with multiple measures in place—giving every patient better quality of life. The staff also works closely with insurance companies to limit out-of-pocket expenses.
When not seeing patients—or working on a book or research paper on thyroid cancer-Dr. Van Nostrand enjoys sailing and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay or at Cape Hatteras.
