About me

Emily A. Sloan, MD, PhD, is Associate Director of Neuropathology at the MedStar Comprehensive Brain Tumor Center and Department of Pathology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. As a diagnostic neuropathologist, her clinical focus is on diseases of the central nervous system, with an emphasis on neoplastic disease and the grading and classification of CNS tumors. She also has expertise in neuromuscular pathology and autopsy pathology. She is triple board certified in Neuropathology, Anatomic Pathology, and Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Sloan is a member of multiple societies including the American Association of Neuropathologists, College of American Pathologists, and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. She has published more than 25 basic science and translational research studies in peer-reviewed journals. With this knowledge, she integrates histopathologic classification and molecular informatics to ensure her patients receive the best possible diagnostic care.

Dr. Sloan also actively participates in education of residents, fellows, and medical students, receiving a teaching award for Resident Education. She earned her Ph.D in Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology investigating the molecular genetics of HIV infection, and maintains a strong interest in infectious diseases and health equity.

Dr. Sloan’s main areas of clinical expertise include:

  • Expert diagnostic services in neuro-oncology, inflammatory/autoimmune disease, infectious processes, muscle and nerve disorders, and neurodegenerative disease
  • Rapid intraoperative consultations
  • Post-mortem neuropathologic brain examinations, including evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as general autopsy services
  • Ancillary techniques including histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructural evaluation, and molecular genetics for integrated tumor classification
