About the Provider

Giuseppe Giaccone, MD, PhD, is associate director for clinical research and co-leader of the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the director for clinical research for the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Network.  He also serves as a professor of medical oncology and pharmacology in the Department of Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center. Before coming to Lombardi, Dr. Giaccone was chief of the Medical Oncology Branch at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
As principal investigator on several phase I, II and III clinical research trials, Dr. Giaccone has studied how to use targeted drug therapy in select patients with specific genetic variations in their tumors. Dr. Giaccone's laboratory has been investigating how to use the body's immune system (immunotherapy) to combat lung cancer, including how anticancer agents work against specific genetic abnormalities in lung cancer tumors, and how to prevent or combat drug-resistance. His clinical studies focus on malignancies of the chest, including lung cancer (non-small cell and small cell), thymic epithelial tumors and phase I studies in patients with molecular subtypes of cancers.
Dr. Giaccone has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers and contributed to more than 30 book chapters. He also has organized international conferences and serves as co-chair for the American Society for Clinical Oncology's guidelines for advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
Dr. Giaccone's Philosophy of Care
Today's research and treatment of lung cancer are at the cutting edge of science and technology. Enormous progress has been made in lung cancer treatment. Several targeted therapies and now immunotherapies have changed the way we treat the disease. Cancer patients and their families who come to the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center will work closely with a team of dedicated and knowledgeable cancer specialists to determine the most appropriate treatment path for their specific cancer needs.
My research is focused on advancing our understanding of lung cancer and thymic tumors and their responses to specific treatment, including how to harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. I keep my patients and their families front and center in my practice to help them understand the technology that may be available to them. My goal is to always work together with my patients, using science to overcome disease.
