Jon Katz, MD, MBA, is a highly experienced maternal-fetal medicine specialist affiliated with MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. He has more than 30 years of experience caring for women with high-risk pregnancies and pregnancy complications, including those with diabetes, high blood pressure, twins, triplets, underlying medical disorders, previous pregnancies with less than ideal outcomes, and women interested in optimizing their health prior to conception.
Dr. Katz’s clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of mothers whose unborn fetus has birth concerns, managing multiple gestations (twins and triplets), and preterm birth. He has been involved in extensive research studying HIV in pregnancy. His current research interests include analyzing the use of aspirin for reducing the incidence of preeclampsia in pregnancy and examining factors that lead to mothers delivering extremely prematurely due to high blood pressure.
Dedicated to helping women optimize their pregnancy, Dr. Katz is passionate about reaching out to women pre-pregnancy to build awareness that with co-management and/or consultation with a physician prior to pregnancy, many medical disorders can be managed so that they do not negatively impact the pregnancy.
Dr. Katz received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He then completed a four-year internship/residency training program in obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts University School of Medicine before completing a two-year specialty fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He continued his education and received an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Katz is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and previously served as President of The Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Maryland, of which he remains a member. He was named a Northern Virginia Magazine Top Doctor in 2011.
Philosophy of Care
“Fortunately, most of the high-risk pregnancy care I provide is to reassure families, at the time of an ultrasound or during a consultation, that they will have a healthy baby. For those mothers with serious health concerns, or for families that I identify that their baby has a potential for a birth abnormality, I work tirelessly to help them navigate medical care with other specialists and prepare them for what to expect at delivery and in the newborn period. The challenges of working with families, when the outcome is going to be different than what they expected, is extremely rewarding.
“With an MBA and a concentration in Medical Services, my interests include improving office efficiency, so our office can provide care to as many Maryland residents and patients from surrounding areas as possible. I look forward to serving those families referred for high-risk pregnancy care.”
