About the Provider

Dr. Kenneth Means is a hand specialist who sees patients in Ellicott City, near Catonsville on Wilkens Avenue, and in Baltimore at The Curtis National Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.

Kenneth Means Jr., MD, is a fellowship trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, and holds the Certificate of Added Qualification for Surgery of the Hand from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is the hand/upper extremity consultant for sports teams including the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Blast, Towson University, and Morgan State University. He is also the clinical research director at The Curtis National Hand Center, and has published several research articles, textbook chapters, and professional reviews.

Dr. Means specializes in hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow trauma, including fractures, dislocations, and nerve/tendon/ligament/blood vessel injuries; upper extremity nerve compression, including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes; Dupuytren's contracture of the fingers/hand; trigger finger; distal biceps injuries; and arthritis and other conditions affecting the hand, thumb, wrist and elbow. He also sees upper extremity skin and soft tissue injuries and lacerations. Dr. Means uses both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for adult and pediatric patients, including the most recent reconstructive and arthroscopic treatment techniques.

At The Curtis National Hand Center, Dr. Means is the Clinical Research Director and is currently involved in clinical and academic activities which include surgical and non-surgical care of patients with hand, wrist, and elbow conditions, research, lecturing, book and journal publication, and education of fellows and residents from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He has received the Golden Apple teaching award from the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital orthopedic residency in 2008 and from The Curtis National Hand Center fellowship in 2010. In 2011, Dr. Means was part of the inaugural international hand mission with Operation Smile.

Dr. Means attended a 7-year accelerated B.S./M.D. program at UMDNJ-NJMS then completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He did additional fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at The Curtis National Hand Center.

Dr. Means was named a 2017, 2019, and 2020 "Top Doc" by Baltimore magazine for Hand Surgery.
