About the Provider

Konstantinos Loupasakis, MD, is a board-certified rheumatologist and a member of the MedStar Health Research Institute Institutional Review Board (IRB). As a clinician educator, he is responsible for evaluating and managing the rheumatology fellowship immunology curriculum for the training of rheumatology fellows at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Loupasakis specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases and pain disorders that affect the bones, joints, and the muscles. As a specialty-trained rheumatologist, he takes a multidisciplinary approach to care. His methods of treatment include medications, joint injections including trigger finger injections, and coordinating musculoskeletal care such as referrals for physiatry, physical therapy, and orthopedic surgery. He sees patients for a wide range of rheumatologic conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, gout, vasculitis, myositis, sarcoidosis, and spondyloarthropathies such as ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.

Dr. Loupasakis received his medical degree from the University of Crete School of Medicine. He then completed residency training in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center associated with the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Loupasakis joined the top-ranked Weill Cornell Medical College-affiliated Hospital for Special Surgery in New York for a three-year rheumatology fellowship and an advanced rheumatology academic/research track fellowship before joining MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Additionally, he has been mentored by world experts and leaders in lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and rheumatology education.

His clinical interests include rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus. His research interests include the pathogenesis and molecular mechanism of rheumatoid arthritis as well as identifying and describing a subset of patients who have developed arthritis as a result of sarcoidosis. He has also participated in research related to mechanisms that lead to lupus nephritis. He has published and presented his research findings both nationally and internationally. Dr. Loupasakis has received awards for his dedication to research, including the Scientist Development Award from the American College of Rheumatology’s Rheumatology Research Foundation and the Charles L. Christian Award for excellence in musculoskeletal research from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. Additionally, he has received several awards for clinical excellence during his medical school training.

Dr. Loupasakis is interested in exploring the efficacy of new biologic treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus. For rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, these oral and injectable medications provide targeted treatments, which can potentially help avoiding the need for prolonged steroid therapies and, in many cases, allow patients to administer medication at home, providing more autonomy.

In addition to English, Dr. Loupasakis is fluent in Greek.

Philosophy of Care

“I make every effort to provide care with a high level of professionalism, empathy, and compassion. These emotional components are necessary in order to give full attention to the patient. This, in conjunction with the rigorous training that I have completed, is what I’m eager to apply in order to improve the quality of life for my patients. I educate my patients about their medical conditions and I aim at forming a therapeutic alliance and working together on their medical problems for the improvement of their health.

“I feel proud when I have made a difference in an individual’s life by improving not only their health but also their overall quality of life.”
