About the Provider

LeeAnn Rhodes, MD, is the Medical Director of Pain Management at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a pain management specialist, Dr. Rhodes works with a focus on back pain, especially with individuals who have previously had treatments, physical therapy, or surgery for a variety of conditions involving the back and continue to have persistent pain.
Dr. Rhodes’ treatment methods focus on lifestyle management in order to control previously existing conditions such as diabetes or sleep deprivation, as well as medical management, with an emphasis on alternative options to narcotics. Treatment therapies performed by Dr. Rhodes include nerve injections, nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections, injections at the back joints, lumbar blocks, and spinal cord stimulation. Oftentimes, her treatment options enlist various cultural philosophies, such as movement exercises like yoga and tai chi.
Dr. Rhodes is dedicated to providing holistic care. She seeks a profound understanding of cultures around the world who experience significantly less pain of certain types and in certain parts of the body. Through this endeavor, she hopes to learn about additional techniques that will benefit her patients. Throughout her practice, Dr. Rhodes has received numerous awards, including Who’s Who in Health and Medical Science, International Who’s Who of Professional & Business Women, and 1000 World Leaders of Scientific Influence. She is widely published and has given numerous lectures around the country regarding pain management.
Dr. Rhodes received her medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she graduated cum laude. She then completed an internship in internal medicine at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center followed by a residency and fellowship in pain medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital before joining MedStar.
Dr. Rhodes is passionate about patient education. Through knowledge, she hopes to empower her patients to take control of their care to correctly follow their treatment plans, and, as a result, spend less time in the emergency room.
Dr. Rhodes is an advocate for providing spinal cord stimulation to more individuals with persistent back pain and/or nerve-related pain in the arms or legs. Spinal cord stimulation technology has greatly advanced in the past few decades, and now, physicians are able to achieve more effective results in a more efficient manner.

Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy has always been to look at the individual as a whole. Pain relief is not about a treatment, it’s about lifestyle. For this reason, I aim to address the various and oftentimes related aspects of pain management.
“In order to have the greatest impact on my patients, I stress education and spend time answering all of their questions. When my patients are knowledgeable about their conditions, as well as their treatment options, I find they take control of their health and are able to move forward in the treatment process.
“Each individual is unique and not every treatment will work the same for everyone. My treatments are tailored to the needs of each person. I set attainable and realistic goals for my patients in order to help them attain the best quality of life possible with the least amount of pain.”
