About the Provider

Loren Connolly, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in both the state of Maryland and the state of Delaware.  She recently joined the Psychology Department of the MedStar National Rehab Network in 2017 as a Rehabilitation Psychologist at Good Samaritan Hospital.  Dr. Connolly has over twenty years of experience working with patients in a healthcare setting who are coping with chronic health problems and major medical illness. She is part of the interdisciplinary rehab team treating patients who are in the acute inpatient rehabilitation program at Good Samaritan Hospital (CIIRP). Dr. Connolly also has an outpatient practice where she will treat patients following discharge from the hospital, as needed, to provide continuity of care and ongoing support.  Dr. Connolly specializes in treating patients who are experiencing adjustment issues and/or symptoms of depression and anxiety related to disability and functional change.

Dr. Connolly received her BA from the College of the Holy Cross where she majored in psychology with a concentration in gerontology.  She attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for graduate school earning her MS in psychology and then her Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She completed her internship (including a summer training program in neuropsychology) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.  She then proceeded to complete a two year post-doctoral fellowship at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, which included inpatient rehabilitation, neuropsychology, dementia evaluation and treatment, and research. Before coming to MedStar, Dr. Connolly worked as a Rehabilitation Psychologist for Christiana Care Health System on their inpatient rehabilitation unit and in their outpatient brain injury program.

Dr. Connolly has a special interest in working with individuals who have experienced a major life change as a result of a medical trauma or major health crisis. This includes patients recovering from spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, amputation, cardiac issues or medical debility. Adjustment issues including symptoms of depression and anxiety are common in this population and affect both the individual and the family. Dealing with a sense of loss and changes in identity can be additional challenges. Psychotherapy and supportive counseling are a valuable piece in the recovery process and can help maximize rehabilitation potential and overall well being. Chronic pain and coping with disability are also areas of interest and Dr. Connolly has additional training in gero-psychology and treating dementia with depression.
