About the Provider

Momina Mastoor, MD, is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and echocardiography (2-D Echo and Transesophageal Echo). She practices at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Mastoor's major interest is structural heart disease, a form of non-coronary heart disease. She is an active member of MedStar's Structural Heart Disease program, performing noninvasive diagnostic procedures and confirming patients' diagnoses.

Examples of structural heart disease include: aortic stenosis (narrowing of aortic valve, which decreases blood flow to the heart); atrial septal defect (hole in wall that separates two heart chambers); and known or potential blood clots in the left atrial appendage (pouch in the heart atrium's muscle wall).

Dr. Mastoor assists during transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure (known as TAVR) where she conducts transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), which allows a very clear look of heart valves and defects. A flexible tube (endoscope) with a camera at its tip enters the patient's esophagus and stomach, and looks at the heart from behind.
In addition, Dr. Mastoor provides TEE guidance during device closure of PFO (patent foramen ovale) and ASD (atrial septum defect).

Dr. Mastoor's passion is preventive cardiology--detecting and preventing progression of disease. Her personal struggle overcoming obesity has given her empathy as well as resolve in counseling patients in lifestyle changes to beat heart disease. She also shares her story of overcoming hydrophobia (fear of water), and becoming an avid swimmer, to challenge patients to get more exercise.

Dr. Mastoor enjoys her relationship with her patients, which is evident in her excellent memory about each one and in her respectful manner. She has been named a Top Doctor in Baltimore magazine for Cardiology 2015, 2016, and 2017.
