About the Provider

Steven Boyce, MD, is a board-certified, internationally renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and Surgical Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He is one of the busiest cardiothoracic surgeons in the country, performing over 425 heart surgeries per year, including globally, and over 11,000 in total.

Dr. Boyce specializes in complex, high-risk bypass surgery. He sees patients for adult cardiac surgery, coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, surgery for advanced heart failure and heart transplants. His clinical and research interests include the surgical treatment of advanced heart failure.

Dr. Boyce received his undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then completed a surgery internship and a surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco before attending UCLA to complete a chief residency in cardiothoracic surgery as well as a fellowship in cardiac transplantation. Following a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School, he then moved to Washington, DC, to join MedStar Washington Hospital Center. For many years, Dr. Boyce has been named one of the "Best Doctors in America", "America's Top Surgeons" and a Washingtonian "Top Doctor".

Early on in his career, Dr. Boyce became fascinated with the engineering aspects of developing devices that would take over the functions of the human heart. Dr. Boyce has been instrumental in the development of mechanical circulatory assist devices, in particular, mini left ventricular assist devices, also known as LVADs. Dr. Boyce has been an investigator in more than 80 clinical trials, including HeartWare's ADVANCE and ENDURANCE trial. In addition to clinical trials, he has authored over 120 peer reviewed papers. Dr. Boyce is also the founder of MyLVAD.com, a resource that provides information through social connectivity, written content and webinars in order to maximize the quality of life for LVAD patients and their loved ones.

When not working to develop new techniques and technologies in order to decrease mortality rates of patients with chronic heart failure, Dr. Boyce enjoys traveling and educating physicians around the world on new cardiothoracic surgical techniques.

Philosophy of Care

"There's nothing I find more enjoyable and more gratifying than being able to use my talents every day to help those suffering from heart disease. My goal is to treat each individual suffering from heart disease in the most compassionate, beneficial and efficient manner. This includes helping my patients to achieve an ease and a peace of mind about their treatment options. The mind is a powerful instrument. I do my best to ensure that my patients come to the operating room in the best possible frame of mind, which has a direct impact on their recovery time with us after the procedure."
