About me
Elizabeth (Beth) Strand is a board-certified oncology nurse practitioner who specializes in breast cancer. Beth currently practices at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Prior to moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 2018, she worked at the Gillette Center for breast cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital. She enjoys symptom management and patient education. Her philosophy involves assisting women to not just survive breast cancer but to thrive.
Beth works collaboratively with the breast oncologists and helps patients understand their individual treatment plan. Her approach to care focuses on taking time to carefully assess concerns and side effects both during active treatment and beyond. She applies evidenced based strategies for maximizing symptom management, whether during chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, post treatment, or in metastatic disease, so that patients can maximize their quality of life and minimize interruptions to their daily lives.
She has a strong interest in cancer survivorship, having published in this area, and is dedicated to improving the quality of life and outcome of cancer patients through important lifestyle interventions including exercise, diet, and psycho-social interventions. Beth enjoys connecting patients to integrative therapies and community resources. As a gymnast in her early years, she has an interest in how maintaining physical strength enhances overall health. In addition, her background in religious studies informs her approach and led her into oncology where the cancer experience often invites questions of meaning and purpose.
Philosophy of care
"A breast cancer diagnosis is a life-changing experience. It generates feelings of anxiety and uncertainty for patients and their loved ones. I see my job first as listening and then offering innovative and evidence-based strategies to minimize symptoms and enhance well-being throughout the experience of breast cancer and beyond."
