About me

Dr. Gramza is the medical oncology director of Head and Neck Cancer at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and the medical oncologist specializing in Head and Neck and Endocrine Cancers at the Washington Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. At both institutions, Dr. Gramza uses the most current and successful therapies available for each patient's unique cancer, including referral to clinical trials.

Prior to joining Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Washington Cancer Institute, Dr. Gramza was an intramural investigator in the Endocrine Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health, where she developed new treatments for thyroid malignancies.

Previously, she was a staff physician at the Portland Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, and held a joint appointment as assistant professor and medical oncologist at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and its Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Clinics, respectively.

Dr. Gramza has been principal investigator and co-investigator for multiple clinical studies involving targeted therapy for thyroid cancer and new therapies for head and neck cancers. She has also received many grants for translational research.

Dr. Gramza's Philosophy of Care

One of the important things about the head and neck cancer program at both MedStar Georgetown and the Hospital Center is its interdisciplinary and extremely well-organized approach. Head and neck cancer care and treatment requires a team of oncologists, head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists and others working closely together to ensure the best possible patient outcome. The team's regular communication about our patients' care further strengthens our program.

I think about each patient's treatment as if I were thinking about cancer treatment for a close friend or family member. A big part of my job is to help my patients make educated decisions about their treatments. I offer my medical opinion, but also try to provide a holistic scenario for each patient that considers his or her lifestyle and preferences. I try to make recommendations that are comfortable and feel right for each individual. Particularly for an incurable cancer, I really focus on quality of life considerations throughout treatment. If the cancer is curable, I work as hard and as quickly as I can to get patients healthy and back to their support systems. I enjoy the continuity of care in my field caring for patients through the entire course of disease. Through research, there's always the chance for an outstanding result for the patient.
