About me
Gabriele Maria Iacona, MD, is a cardiac surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He is a member of the European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr. Iacona’s primary focus is coronary artery bypass grafting, or CABG. While CABG is a common procedure, it has grown increasingly more complicated as patients present with multiple comorbidities and advanced disease stages. Dr. Iacona’s unique specialization offers nuanced knowledge and sophisticated surgical skill.
He also has extensive training and practice experience across a broad range of adult and pediatric cardiac surgical subspecialties, and performs procedures for patients with multiple and mixed valvular heart diseases, endocarditis, aortic disease, and heart failure, among others.
Prior to joining MedStar Health, Dr. Iacona practiced at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, as well as several major European hospitals. He has also served in various teaching capacities throughout his career, training medical students, junior surgeons, and allied health professionals skills.
Philosophy of care
“I truly enjoy working with patients. I know what it’s like to be one, so I can empathize. I take the time to listen closely to each person before offering a solution. I am never on “autopilot,” as each case is different for many reasons.
I believe in a true team approach. Together with the referring physician and other colleagues, we talk and plan, review images, and evaluate the entire clinical picture. We determine how each of us can help the patient, and then present the most optimal, personalized solution that best connects with their goals.”
