About me

Dr. John F. Marra, MD, is a clinical cardiologist, Director of the Observation Unit, and Office Medical Director of MedStar Medical Group at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also an Assistant in Medicine  at John Hopkins Medical School and previously served for many years as Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Marra has 30 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a comprehensive range of adult cardiovascular conditions.

In his treatment approach, Dr. Marra focuses on achieving an accurate diagnosis and delivering proper and prompt individual therapy, while emphasizing the importance of discussion and communication with his patients. Dr Marra has special expertise in coronary stents and bypass surgery management; he has performed over 3,000 cardiac catheterizations in patients with coronary artery disease and managed these patients following the procedure. He also practices preventive cardiology in order to prevent future cardiac events and improve quality of life for his patients.

Dr. Marra has special interests in hypertension, cholesterol management, heart failure, coronary heart disease, and preventive cardiology, and has given hundreds of peer lectures on these topics.

After attending medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. Marra went on to complete his residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in cardiology, at George Washington University Hospital. While there, he became a Special Research Fellow in Cardiology, receiving an additional year of comprehensive cardiovascular training that included teaching cardiology fellows and resident physicians and performing cardiac procedures such as cardiac catheterization and echocardiography. Dr. Marra worked for many years as an Associate at Good Samaritan Hospital and later joined the MedStar Medical Group.

Dr. Marra was awarded the Special Research Fellowship at George Washington University Hospital and has received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in medical teaching at the University of Maryland Hospital Midtown Campus. He has also been honored as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).

Philosophy of Care

“My therapeutic goals for patients are holistic, recognizing their general well-being and family situation as significant factors in their health. Having worked as a practicing clinical cardiologist for more than 30 years, I have learned that a patient’s cardiac disorder is only one part of their health, and that other components which support and diminish their health need to be considered, such as their home situation and habits. As a physician, it is rewarding to get to know my patients in greater depth, with consideration of these factors. My goal is to engage with each patient -- every patient will sit with me in my office for discussion, rather than only being seen in an examination room.”

I told Dr. Marra that I am a retired nurse and understand the language and asked him to talk with me with clinical terms. He was outstanding in all the areas above. I wanted a 'clinician' cardiologist and Dr. Marra is definitely that! His approach, taking in all parts of my life as that affects my health is totally in concert with how I want to approach healing and managing my self-care. I am most happy with my choice.
