About me

Raffaele Girlanda, MD, joined the faculty of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in 2009, after completing a fellowship at the hospital in liver, kidney, pancreas and intestine transplantation, and hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery. Equally experienced with both adult and pediatric liver transplantation, Dr. Girlanda also specializes in intestinal and multivisceral transplant, short gut syndrome and transplant surgery.
Dr. Girlanda is an active researcher whose work frequently appears in such peer-reviewed journals as Transplantation, Hepatology, American Journal of Transplantation, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and others. He also serves as a reviewer for multiple professional journals and publications and has been an invited lecturer and presenter at numerous national and international professional meetings, including the American Transplant Congress and World Transplant Congress.
As assistant professor in Transplant Surgery at Georgetown University Medical School, Dr. Girlanda is a past recipient of the John S. Dillon Award for Outstanding Faculty Teacher.
After completing his medical education in Verona, Italy, Dr. Girlanda served as Senior Registrar in Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary/ Pancreatic Surgery at King's College Hospital, London, UK, for seven years. He then relocated to the United States for a research fellowship in transplant immunology at NIH followed by his Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
