Division Chief Welcome Letter | Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program | MedStar Health

Letter from the Division Chief

Dear Child & Adolescent Residency Training Program Applicant:

We are so pleased that you are considering coming to the Nation’s Capital to learn about our training program. At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, we have created a rapidly growing clinical program in child and adolescent psychiatry, with talented and dedicated clinicians treating children, adolescent, and young adults with a wide range of mental health challenges. We know that emotional, behavioral, and cognitive problems are very common in childhood, and we believe they should be approached with an understanding of the developmental and family contexts in which they occur. Our clinicians work with patients ranging in ages from early childhood to young adulthood, and place special emphasis on understanding family functioning and relationships to make the most accurate diagnoses and provide the most useful treatment recommendations. The program offers a full spectrum of therapeutic services including individual psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, and medication treatments.

Our clinicians have extensive experience treating children with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavior disorders, learning disorders, and autism-spectrum disorders, as well as youth struggling to adjust to stressful life situations and coping with medical illnesses. Our faculty are active in clinical and mental health systems research, much of which focuses on identifying novel strategies to deliver high-quality mental health care to underserved children and families, thereby addressing health disparities that particularly affect poor and minority youth.

Additionally, we place a special focus on providing child and adolescent psychiatry trainees with clinical and educational opportunities that balance the biological, medical, psychotherapeutic, and humanistic elements of diagnosis and treatment that make this such a compelling field in which to work.

We hope that you will contact, so we can provide you with insights into our philosophies, facilities, faculty, and current trainees, and allow you to explore the most relevant questions you are considering as you plan for the next stage of your training.
