Clinician Scientist Track

The Clinician Scientist track caters to residents interested in a career in research. Residents learn clinical skills on inpatient and outpatient rotations. In this track, residents spend a significant period of time focusing on a research project under the guidance of a mentor at the NIH.

Clinician Scientist Track Rotation Schedules

PGY-1 Year

  • Internal Medicine internship year will be done at Georgetown University Hospital before starting the Neurology specific training. Neurology residents will spend 12 weeks of this intern year in the Department of Neurology

  • 2 weeks of Neuropathology and Neuroradiology

PGY-2 Year

  • NIH Research: 4 weeks
  • Georgetown Neurology Ward Service: 8 weeks
  • Georgetown Epilepsy: 4 weeks
  • Georgetown Neurology Night Float: 4 weeks (divided into 2 week blocks)
  • Georgetown Outpatient Clinic: 4 weeks
  • Washington Hospital Center Neurology Consult Service: 12 weeks
  • Washington Hospital Center Neurocritical Care: 4 weeks
  • Washington Hospital Center Night Float: 4 weeks
  • Residents participate in a weekly half-day continuity clinic at Washington Hospital Center, providing them the opportunity to manage patients longitudinally over several years

PGY-3 Year

  • Georgetown Neurology Consult Service: 8 weeks
  • NIH Research: 8 weeks
  • Georgetown Epilepsy: 4 weeks
  • Georgetown Outpatient Clinic: 4 weeks
  • Georgetown Neurology Night Float: 2 weeks
  • Pediatric Neurology (Children’s National Medical Center): 4 weeks
  • NIH Research: 4 weeks
  • MedStar Washington Hospital Center Chief: 4 weeks
  • Washington Hospital Center Stroke: 8 weeks
  • MedStar Washington Hospital Center Night Float: 4 weeks
  • Residents participate in a weekly half-day continuity clinic at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, providing them the opportunity to manage patients longitudinally over several years

PGY-4 Year

  • Georgetown Neurology Chief Resident: 8 weeks
  • Georgetown Psychiatry: 4 weeks
  • Georgetown Outpatient Chief Clinic: 8 weeks
  • NIH Research: 8 weeks
  • Pediatric Inpatient Neurology (Children’s National Medical Center): 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Outpatient Neurology (Children’s National Medical Center): 4 weeks
  • NIH Research: 4 weeks
  • MedStar Washington Hospital Center Chief: 4 weeks
  • NIH (National Institute of Health) Clinical Research: 4 weeks
  • Residents participate in a weekly half-day continuity clinic at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, providing them the opportunity to manage patients longitudinally over several years
