Faculty and staff play a vital role in the education of our residents, fellows and students. Our ACGME accredited, competency-based, Anatomic and Clinical pathology residency program is intended to train competent diagnostic pathologists.
Our ACGME accredited fellowships strive to prepare pathologists for sub-specialty practices in Cytopathology and Transplant, Medical Kidney and Liver Pathology.
Medical Student Education
The fourth year medical student elective provides students with a solid foundation in surgical and clinical diagnostic principles as well as an introduction to subspecialty areas. Educational values include inquiry, involvement and innovation. Students outside of Georgetown University should inquire through the School of Medicine, Office of Medical Education. (202-687-4219)
Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Program
The anatomic and clinical pathology program is a 4-year categorical program with a broad depth of educational opportunities within the Medstar system and at our affiliate sites. Residents complete both AP and CP rotations each year of training and experience diverse and comprehensive case materials.
We strive to train pathologists who are competent in all aspects of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The trained pathologist from Georgetown University Hospital should capably perform the duties of his or her specialty in any clinical or academic setting with professionalism, integrity and to the best of their ability. Graduates will use their anatomic skills to make accurate diagnoses, communicate with their fellow clinicians and have the ability to recognize their personal limitations and seek proper consultation when necessary. In addition, graduates will apply fundamental managerial principles in the operation of a laboratory. They will use their background in evidence-based medicine and research techniques to make decisions regarding new data and testing procedures for better patient care. We hope to not only instruct our residents at the highest level, but also to encourage and inspire enthusiasm for a successful career in Pathology.
