Psychiatry Residency Wellness Group Photo

Resident well-being is a priority in our residency training program. This is reflected in a system wide initiative that MedStar Health has undertaken, as well as a concentrated effort in our own department to address the needs of our residents and contribute to their well-being.

GME Wellness Initiatives: MedStar Health has a significant investment in physician well-being. There is a Medical Director for Well-being, Dr. Dan Marchalik, who is a standing member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC). MedStar Health joined the Stanford Physician Wellness Academic Consortium (PWAC) in 2017 and we have conducted a yearly survey of well-being to all faculty, residents and fellows. Our response rate was greater than 50 percent and provides us with robust baseline data on specific areas of burnout and professional fulfillment, and factors impacting these areas.

We have instituted a new benefit for all residents and fellows, "care.com", which allows for 10 emergent days per year of unexpected child care or elder care. Residents have access to self-assessment tools and ways to get in touch with someone who can help. Finally, the Physician Concierge program allows all physicians including residents to connect directly with a personalized assistant who can help them navigate various resources. Department of Psychiatry Well-being Initiatives: We have a department wellness Champion, Dr. Pauline Tsai, who keeps us informed of wellness tools available system-wide. After conducting a needs assessment with each class to determine wellness needs, we have dedicated regular didactics hours for wellness in each of the four years of training. Each of our classes has a wellness coach who meets with them regularly during didactics to facilitate group cohesion, group discussions and provides wellness tools and practices. This initiative has been very well received by the residents who look forward to their time with their wellness coaches.

In addition, we have resident run mentorship and social committees that identify mentors for each resident and organize social events that help residents feel supported by their colleagues and part of our community.
