The Department of Surgery supports research endeavors for faculty, residents and students in collaboration with Georgetown University, MedStar Health Research Institute and the MedStar Institute for Innovation. We feel that dedicated research time better prepares our residents for a career in academic surgery and encourage all residents to pursue projects during residency and in dedicated non-clinical research years.

All residents are required to participate in scholarly activity during residency. Projects are available in every clinical division, and additional opportunities are found in the MedStar Georgetown Surgical Outcomes Research Center. In addition, each resident participates in a quality improvement project within the department or as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Resident research culminates in our annual Hufnagel Research Forum, celebrating our academic endeavors and showcasing the work that our residents have completed. Residents present their completed and ongoing projects to a panel of judges, and the best clinical and basic science presentations receive awards at our Graduation dinner and ceremony.
