"I think the strengths of the program have been what a strong interdisciplinary team we have here...a lot of great mentorship, a lot of great education..."

Welcome to the Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program at MedStar Health/Washington Hospital Center
The fields of hospice and palliative care are rapidly expanding to meet the symptom management, communication, and complex decision-making needs of patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Given these clinical needs as well as opportunities for leadership, education and research, we are excited that you are considering palliative medicine fellowship training as the next step in your career development – welcome to the field!
MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a 912-bed tertiary care center in the heart of Washington, DC. A major teaching affiliate of Georgetown University, the Center annually provides care to over 40,000 inpatients and 350,000 outpatients, including the most complicated medical cases referred from more than 50 regional hospitals. The wide range of specialty services – including the Heart and Vascular Institute, Washington Cancer Institute, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and MedSTAR Trauma Center – create fertile ground for interdisciplinary palliative care training. Our program’s local hospice partners provide training in expert end-of-life care across care settings and pioneer new hospice care delivery models.
In our one-year ACGME-accredited physician fellowship program, fellows receive mentored training experience in clinical skills, core competency development as educators and program administrators, and exposure to research and quality improvement. At the completion of their training, fellows will be eligible to obtain board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Alongside our physician fellowship program, we now offer a one-year palliative social work training program and a one-year palliative nurse practitioner training program.
We train our fellows to become future leaders in the field. An interprofessional educational curriculum on symptom management, communication skills, interdisciplinary care of patients and families, and self-care complements the robust clinical rotation schedule.
Our fellowship’s core interdisciplinary faculty, the largest in the metro DC area, has extensive experience training physicians and other clinical providers in hospice and palliative care. Additional faculty, from within the MedStar Health System and throughout the Washington-Baltimore region, provide broad educational opportunities to promote fellows’ professional and personal growth.
