Dr. Ethan Goldstein, Palliative Fellow, joined by abstract co-authors Stephanie Blease and Dr. Clint Pettit at the 2019 MedStar Health Research Day

Fellows participate in quality improvement and research activities during training. We welcome new interests and/or participation in current projects, across a range from clinical research to narrative medicine. The composition of our investigators reflects the nature of our discipline: we are interdisciplinary and have wide interests in physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and ethical issues and approaches to care of the seriously ill. Our scholarly work stems from our busy MedStar Washington Hospital Center clinical palliative care consultative practice, but extends beyond the campus to regional and national collaborators. MedStar Washington Hospital Center is also a member site for the Palliative Care Research Cooperative (PCRC). Some recent publications from our group can be viewed here.

Some Ongoing Research Activities Include:

  • Rapid response triggers for palliative consultation
  • Impact of palliative care on neurosurgical patients
  • Virtual reality for pain management in advanced illness
  • Massage therapy for self-efficacy in patients with new left-ventricular assist device
  • Evaluation of sexuality and intimacy issues in palliative care populations
  • Continuous inotrope therapy in hospice care
  • Protocol development for deactivating left-ventricular assist devices at end of life
  • Hospital-to-hospice transitions of care
  • Home-based virtual clinics for heart failure and COPD patients needing ongoing palliative support
