MedStar Health Home Care recognized as HomeCare Elite® ‘Top Agency’

WASHINGTON – MedStar Health Home Care is one of the top performing home health agencies in the U.S. according to the 2019 HomeCare Elite Top Agency list. The Top Agency award signifies MedStar Health Home Care’s District of Columbia agency  as among the top 25% of Medicare-certified home healthcare providers across the nation when it comes to quality of care, quality improvement and consistency, patient experience (HHCAHPS), best practices implementation and financial performance. MedStar Health Home Care is one of 8,818 agencies that were evaluated, and one of just 2,207 winners.

Top Agency rankings are developed by ABILITY® Network—an information technology company, and is sponsored by DecisionHealth (part of the H3.Group). The organization also provides Top 100 and Top 500 agency awards annually. For an agency to be considered, it must be Medicare-certified and have data for at least three outcomes in Home Health Compare.

“The leaders and clinical team members at our D.C. agency work very hard to provide a high level of care and quality to their patients,” said Traci Anderson, MedStar Health Home Care President. “I am very proud of the agency for earning this elite honor for the eighth year in a row, which is certainly a testament to their dedication, consistency, and focus on our mission to make a positive difference in people’s lives.”

In addition to its Washington location, MedStar Health Home Care has agencies in Maryland and northern Virginia. It is one of the region’s oldest and largest home healthcare organizations and is the only home healthcare company in the MedStar Health system.

MedStar Health Home Care vaccinates Secretary of Health and Human Services, additional health officials during national news conference

WASHINGTON – To educate the public on vaccination safety and on the importance of getting an annual flu shot, MedStar Health Home Care administered nearly 60 vaccines to participants and attendees of the 2019 National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) Influenza/Pneumococcal News Conference on Thursday, Sept. 26. The annual conference is a key opportunity for NFID to help the public prepare for the upcoming flu season by encouraging individuals throughout the U.S. over the age of six months to get a flu vaccine every single year.

“When it comes to protecting people from flu, our best preventive tool is an annual flu vaccine,” said Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar, II, who also noted that despite the availability of vaccinations, vaccination rates among adults are “stuck” at around 45%. That means that more than half of adults in the U.S. are unprotected against the flu every year.

To encourage adults to get vaccinated and ensure their loved ones also receive vaccinations, Secretary Azar lead by example, receiving a live, on-air vaccination from a MedStar Health Home Care nurse.

Other health officials who spoke during the conference included William B. Borden, MD, associate professor of medicine and health policy at George Washington University, Patricia N. Whitley-Williams, MD, NFID president-elect, and William Schaffner, NFID medical director. Dr. Borden also received a vaccination from MedStar Health Home Care during the event.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), less than half of the country receives a flu vaccine annually, which leaves more than half of the U.S. population open to contracting and spreading influenza this year. Due to age and immune system weaknesses, young children and aging adults are most at risk. With MedStar Health Home Care’s patient population being predominately senior citizens, MedStar Health Home Care encourages its patients to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated.

“As part of the MedStar Health organization, we advocate and encourage influenza vaccination for our patients, community members, and even our own employees,” said Traci Anderson, RN, MedStar Health Home Care President. “We have required that employees receive vaccinations for a number of years because it’s an important part of our patient safety first culture. That said, we are honored to support NFID and CDC in this important national promotional effort.”

For more information on influenza recommendations, visit CDC.gov or NFID.org.

Local Woman ‘Stops the Bleed’ of Gunshot Victim

An Oxon Hill, Md. man suffering from a gunshot wound is now safe thanks to the quick actions of a MedStar Health employee. Though not an emergency responder, Phyllis Norville, a lead clinical consultant for MedStar Health Home Care, knew exactly what to do in the critical situation thanks to “Stop the Bleed” active shooter training she received at her organization.

Norville had been grocery shopping when the gunshot victim entered the store, yelling that he needed help. She told the man to sit on the floor and apply pressure to the wound on his arm while she called 911 and gathered supplies from the customer service desk to safely assist him.

“I immediately attempted to assess the wound area, took a towel and placed it over the wound, and wrapped it tightly to keep pressure,” said Norville. “With the help of the store manager, I used a belt as a tourniquet. We wrapped it as well as we could several inches above the man’s joint and wound area.”

Hearing the sounds of approaching sirens, Norville spoke with the victim to keep him calm and engaged until emergency services arrived. When EMS asked Norville if she was a nurse or doctor, she said she was neither, and was “just a healthcare professional for many years.”

Norville said, “I give so much credit to MedStar Health’s ‘Stop the Bleed’ training module for teaching me how to handle this situation. “I never thought I would encounter such an emergency. After the shock of it all, I could only think to myself ‘What would I have done if I hadn’t taken that course?’”

According to MedStar Health Home Care President Traci Anderson, “Phyllis is a very dedicated employee who consistently puts others first. I am not surprised to hear that she jumped in to help a stranger in this very serious situation. Her ability to take action and effectively help the man certainly proves the tremendous value in the safety training programs that MedStar Health provides for its employees.”

Local nurses honored for critical, life-saving reactions

BALTIMORE (April 2019) – A home healthcare nurses recently received awards for heroic actions that saved people’s lives. RNs at MedStar Health Home Care Heather Fitzhugh-Boehm and Jennifer Shrader were awarded MedStar Health’s 2018 Safety HeRO awards for taking charge in separate, critical moments that without intervention could have led to disastrous consequences.

* * *

Fitzhugh-Boehm’s heroic story occurred last January when she helped rescue a family from a house fire. After finishing a home visit, Fitzhugh-Boehm noticed dark smoke in the sky. As she drove closer to it, she realized a rowhome was on fire.

Fitzhugh-Boehm immediately called 911. Then she heard someone scream.

A woman on the second floor of the house needed help. She had a baby inside and wanted to drop her out the window.

Fitzhugh-Boehm acted fast. She asked the woman to drop down a blanket she could use to catch the baby. Neighbors arrived, and with their help, Fitzhugh-Boehm was able to catch the child safely. Soon after, firefighters arrived and rescued the mother.

For her heroic actions and commitment to safety, Fitzhugh-Boehm received the 2018 Super HeRO award.

Shrader’s safety moment happened in the fall. During a home visit, Shrader’s patient told her he had been feeling particularly unwell that day. She urged him to go to the hospital, but the patient was hesitant. Shrader respected her patient’s wishes and instead asked him to text her later that evening when he made it upstairs safely.

After not hearing anything for several hours, Shrader returned to the house. She found the patient unconscious and bleeding from his head.

Shrader quickly tended to the patient and called an ambulance. The patient was taken and admitted to the hospital with diagnoses of sepsis and staph infection.

For her dedication to patient care and safety, Shrader received the 2018 HeRO Good Catch of the Year award.

Both Heather Fitzhugh-Boehm and Jennifer Shrader received their awards during MedStar Health’s annual Hero Awards ceremony. The awards honor MedStar Health associates who exemplify an unwavering commitment to safety.

MedStar Health Home Care Nurse’s Quick Actions Save Family from House Fire

Elkridge, MD (January 4, 2018) – A home healthcare nurse from MedStar Health Home Care is being hailed a hero for saving the lives of a family trapped inside a house fire in south Baltimore.

Heather Fitzhugh-Boehm, RN, was leaving her patient’s home when she noticed thick, black smoke in the sky nearby. The smoke was coming from a fire inside a row house, where a mother, baby, and teenager were trapped on the second floor. Fitzhugh-Boehm immediately called 9-1-1 and then ran to help.

The mother screamed for someone below to catch her baby. Fitzhugh-Boehm instructed her to throw down a blanket first, which she and a neighbor used to catch the baby, unharmed. The male teenager jumped from the second floor window to escape, and the fire department arrived just in time to rescue the mother. The fire engulfed the building almost immediately after the rescue.

Thanks to Fitzhugh-Boehm's quick thinking and her willingness to act, the entire family made it out safely. Surprisingly, Fitzhugh-Boehm was ready to return to work right after the incident. “Once my adrenaline stopped pumping, I wanted to continue my day and visit the rest of my patients,” she said. “I left as soon as help arrived and called the office to tell them what happened. I assured the office that I was good to go, despite my clothes smelling a little smoky.”

“We are grateful for nurses like Heather who are not only dedicated to their patients but also to the communities they serve,” added MedStar Health Home Care President Traci Anderson. “Our homecare team members must be quick thinkers and be very attentive to their surroundings. This story shows how valuable those skills are. We often say that our team members are heroes and lifesavers. Heather’s actions demonstrate the truth in that statement.”

MedStar Health Home Care Partners with Telehealth Company to Prevent Medical Emergencies

Elkridge, MD (December 14, 2017) – MedStar Health Home Care, which serves patients across Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia, has partnered with Health Recovery Solutions (HRS) to provide high-risk patients with innovative, in-home telemonitoring services. The partnership arises from MedStar Health Home Care’s goal to keep patients healthy and at home while reducing medical complications and the need for repeat hospital visits.

Telemonitoring allows MedStar Health Home Care nurses to receive important information about patients’ vital signs and health symptoms in between visits to the patients’ homes. Patients who are enrolled in the home monitoring program will receive HRS’ telehealth technology package, consisting of a 4G tablet with Bluetooth biometric devices such as a blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, and scale. These tools allow patients to record their own vitals daily. Each tablet also comes pre-loaded with educational videos and teach-back quizzes individualized to meet each patient’s needs. Nurses and other home healthcare team members can access patient vitals anytime and anywhere through HRS’ ClinicianConnect web portal and smartphone application. Nurses will be able to respond quickly to abnormal readings while working with physicians to make changes to a patient’s care plan.

The HRS telehealth platform allows for seamless communication between the clinician and the patient. The patient can communicate with his/her nurse through text messaging or phone call from the tablet. Likewise, the clinician can contact the patient through the HRS ClinicianConnect web portal and smartphone application.

According to Traci Anderson, RN, MedStar Health Home Care President, “As a home healthcare provider, our primary goal is to keep our patients living safely in the comfort of their own homes. With HRS’ innovative telemonitoring technology, we can better engage patients to monitor their own vital signs and look out for concerning symptoms. Identifying the negative signs early will allow us to intervene quickly, preventing patient harm and medical emergencies.”

Jarrett Bauer, CEO of HRS, adds, “We are honored that MedStar Health Home Care has chosen our telehealth platform to care for their patients. Patient engagement is important, and we are grateful to provide organizations like MedStar Health Home Care with a solution that helps keep their patients engaged and gives clinicians the ability to stay connected to their patients.”

MedStar Health Home Care Celebrates Homecare Month by Delivering Freedom to Patients at Home

Elkridge, MD (November 20, 2017) – MedStar Health Home Care celebrates National Homecare Month by recognizing the home healthcare professionals who help deliver the freedom people need to live safely in their own homes. Through their skilled care and tireless compassion, the homecare community supports individuals recovering from injury and illness, and overcoming disabilities.

During the month of November, home healthcare companies across the nation honor the millions of nurses, therapists, social workers, homecare aides, and other professionals who make a positive difference for the patients and families they serve. These healthcare and business professionals provide medical treatment, rehabilitation, IV therapy, wound care, self-care education, medication management, activities of daily living support, remote patient monitoring and other critical services to help patients live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

As one of the founders of home healthcare, MedStar Health Home Care began in 1900 as one of only 20 visiting nurse societies in the United States, seeking to improve health and treat disease in the community. MedStar Health Home Care continues to blaze the trail in home healthcare by creating innovative ways to care for patients in the home, while offering the empathy and compassion many patients need most.

To further celebrate Home Healthcare Month, MedStar Health Home Care honored all of its employees during an annual celebration event, held on November 7. This year, two outstanding associates celebrated 40 years of service with the MedStar organization. Twenty-two others celebrated 20 or more years of service. According to MedStar Health Home Care President Traci Anderson, “It takes a special person to dedicate their career to the health and well-being of others. MedStar Health Home Care Agency Named as Top Agency of the 2017 ABILITY HomeCare Elite

TopAgency

ELKRIDGE (November 10, 2017) – MedStar Health Home Care announced that their District of Columbia Agency has been named a Top Agency of the 2017 HomeCare Elite®, a recognition of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. For 12 years, HomeCare Elite has annually identified the top 25 percent of Medicare-certified agencies and highlighted the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. This is the seventh time the agency has been named on the list.

The ranking is developed by ABILITY® Network, a leading information technology company helping providers and payers simplify the administrative and clinical complexities of healthcare; and sponsored by DecisionHealth, publisher of Home Health Line and the Complete Home Health ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Coding Manual.

“The team at MedStar Health Home Care’s District of Columbia Agency has demonstrated an impressive ability to deliver great patient care,” said Christine Lang, senior director for ABILITY Network. “This is due to the skill and dedication of their clinical professionals, as well as the proficiency and efforts of their quality team tracking, measuring and interpreting the data that supports the delivery of care. Together, they have earned this recognition as one of the top home care agencies in the country.”

MedStar Health Home Care President, Traci Anderson, credits the dedicated quality team members, therapists, nurses, and clinical leaders with the agency’s ability to achieve recognition as one of the HomeCare Elite. “Our home healthcare team members work hard to give patients the highest quality of care and service possible with a strong focus on patient safety. Recognition on the HomeCare Elite list is a testament to their clinical expertise, diligence and dedication to our patients," said Anderson.

“Congratulations to those leading agencies that earned a spot on HomeCare Elite,” said Marci Heydt, senior content manager for DecisionHealth. MedStar Health Home Care and its peers have worked hard to improve quality outcomes while maintaining solid profit margins, which is increasingly difficult as home health agencies face increased regulatory burdens each year.”

HomeCare Elite agencies are determined by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, best practices implementation, patient experience (HHCAHPS), quality improvement and consistency, and financial health. In order to be considered, an agency must be Medicare-certified and have data for at least three outcomes in Home Health Compare. Out of 9,064 agencies considered, 2,268 are recognized on the 2017 HomeCare Elite winners list overall.

The entire list of 2017 HomeCare Elite agencies can be downloaded by visiting the ABILITY Network website.
