The MedStar Health Administrative Residency in Clinical Operations & Innovation is a unique program offering candidates an 11-month field placement experience within two systemwide entities. The resident’s time is split evenly between MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2) and MedStar Medical Group (MMG).

MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2)
Chartered in 2009, the MedStar Institute for Innovation catalyzes innovation that advances health; our mantra is “Think Differently.” Our scope of activities includes initiatives in learning and simulation, telehealth and digital/consumer health, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, data science, pharmacogenomics, surgical innovation, and more. MedStar Medical Group (MMG)
MMG, MedStar Health’s provider organization, aims to engage all clinicians, and the teams who work with them, in making MedStar Health’s clinical practices as effective and efficient as possible, taking advantage of best practices and shared experiences in care delivery and operations. MMG’s network consists of medical, surgical, and specialty providers together that provide care for over three million patients at more than 280 locations. MMG is one of the largest medical groups in the country and is committed to building the optimal environment for MedStar’s clinicians to professionally and personally grow.
Residency Overview
The residency program is flexible and self-directed toward achieving the following overarching goals:

Gain comprehensive understanding of the role, activities, and goals of the MedStar Institute for Innovation and how to foster innovation across a large health system

Develop and apply project management skills while aiding in the implementation of key innovation initiatives and programs

Understand the strategy for executing innovation in a large system

Gain exposure to MedStar Health Corporate operations and executive leadership
MedStar Medical Group (MMG)

Gain exposure to financial management and operations of system-wide service lines that fall under Hospital Practices

Study and support strategic initiatives related to Hospital Practices and associated service lines

Learn and develop physician relationship management skills, and understand physician recruitment, retention, and contracting strategies

Improve knowledge of performance and quality improvement
