Bedrail IV Line Holder

In the ICU, IV tubing attached to the Central Line can be heavy and pull on the patient’s line. The lines are usually sutured in or secured to skin so extra weight on the line can cause the patient discomfort. Extra weight can also pull at CL dressings releasing them from the skin and putting the patient at risk for CL infections.

ICU RN’s will occasionally secure a tongue depressor to the patient’s bedside rail closest to the central line with silk tape. IV tubing can then be wedged between the depressor and the rail to secure them to the bedside. Leaving slack for patient movement, this MInnovation can decrease unnecessary weight and pull on the CL and dressing.

Tongue Depressor
Silk Tape

Place tongue depressor on top of bedrail as shown. Using Silk tape, secure the bottom fourth of the tongue depressor to the bedrail, looping through the bedrail 3-4 times.

How long have you been a nurse?
I've been a nurse for five years, the last three of them being in the intensive care unit at Franklin Square. I started at Harbor Hospital on a telemetry unit, then did a year at GBMC's Emergency Department before returning to MedStar.

What's the best part about being a nurse?
Helping patients and their families through probably some of their roughest and most emotional days is truly rewarding. Titrating drips and assisting in life saving procedures also gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

What would you do if you weren’t doing this?
If I wasn't in healthcare, I'd probably do some kind of trade work like electrician or mechanic, I am obsessed with DIY and hoard all the power tools I can.

What was your first job?
My first real job was at UPS where I worked nights, which continued through nursing school. I started as a package handler and became a supervisor rather than drive a truck so I could go to school.

What is your most memorable vacation?
The Outer Banks last summer with my family. My son was one at the time and divided his time between trying to crawl into the ocean and eat fistfuls of sand.

What is your favorite book/movie?
Book - Catch-22, Movie - If The Shawshank Redemption is on I have to watch it, so probably that.
