Ethics and Clinical Social Work | MedStar Washington Hospital Center | MedStar Health

Ethics and Clinical Social Work (ECSW) is a bioethics continuing education (CE) program for social workers. The ECSW was developed by the Lynch Center in 2014 in response to the need of the social work community, both institutionally and across the Mid-Atlantic region, for acquiring CE credits in bioethics. The course is held over two consecutive evenings on-site at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

The ECSW is accredited by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)* and maintains the following course objectives:

  1. Recognize the use of bioethics principles and theory as an approach to resolving issues in clinical medicine.
  2. Illustrate how ethics education, policy, and training can aid social workers in navigating ethics concerns in patient care.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of how to identify ethics issues in complex cases.

*The ECSW is approved by the NASW for 6 continuing education hours in bioethics. Accreditation numbers are provided to participants who complete the course in order to claim education credits.
