Over the next 5 years, participation in the research network will allow MedStar Health to compete for contracts with an overall value up to $75 million.
Hyattsville, MD— MedStar Health is proud to announce its selection by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to participate in its research network, known as ACTION IV: Accelerating Change and Transformation in Organizations and Networks. MedStar Health is just one of 14 organizations selected. The ACTION IV network is the result of three successful iterations of the ACTION network. ACTION IV is focused on the development, implementation, and dissemination of innovative interventions and strategies for improving the delivery of patient care nationwide.
“ACTION provides unique opportunities to rapidly address emerging care delivery challenges that are important to patients, providers and health systems,” said Christine (Chris) Goeschel ScD, MPA, MPS, RN, FAAN, ACTION IV Principal Investigator, and assistant vice president, MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety.
As part of this network, MedStar has become eligible to become a direct contractor with the federal government to undertake research focused on one or more of AHRQ’s priorities for the next five years. AHRQ priorities include improving the quality of healthcare and care delivery, making healthcare safer, increasing accessibility, and improving healthcare affordability, efficiency and cost transparency. For ACTION IV, these priorities have been expanded to include:
- Learning Health Systems Initiatives
- Whole person care across the full spectrum of care and lifespan
- Advancing data-driven approaches for care and population health
- Transformation to a value-based health care system
- Testing Health IT tools in the real world prior to dissemination
“We are proud to be a part of this network for the next five years. This award speaks to our strength as an academic health system and broad expertise to advance health, along with highlighting our previous track record of successful projects under ACTION III,” said Neil J. Weissman, MD, chief scientific officer, MedStar Health, and president, MedStar Health Research Institute. “MedStar Health is committed to healthcare delivery research across the continuum which aligns well with AHRQ’s longstanding and newly expanded priorities.”
AHRQ, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is the nation’s lead health services research and patient safety agency. Its mission is to produce evidence to make healthcare safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within HHS and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used.
This award follows the successful track record of work completed by contracts under the ACTION III network. In 2015, MedStar Health was selected by AHRQ to participate in its research network known as ACTION III, as one of just 13 healthcare organizations to win the five-year award. MedStar Health was also part of the ACTION II network as a collaborator with the Healthcare Research and Educational Trust, in the CANDOR (Communications and Optimal Resolution) project in 2009.
