The MedStar Health Research Institute Office of Research Integrity serves as the institution's executive agency for human research policy, oversight, education and training, IRB management, and extramural relations. The Office of Research Integrity and the Human Research Protection Program function together as a cohesive system working in the most dedicated fashion possible to support MedStar's commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects from research risks.
Major components of the ORI include:
- HRPP - Human Research Protection Program
MHRI has established a system-wide Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) to oversee research conducted with human subjects. The HRPP seeks to ensure that all human research conducted under the auspices of MedStar Health is ethically and methodologically sound as required under public law and, most importantly, as expected by the public trust.
- IACUC - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
The IACUC is responsible for the initial and continuing reviewing of all research studies involving animals done at any MedStar Institution.
- IBC - Institutional Biosafety Committee
The IBC reviews and monitors all research activities involving infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, recombinant DNA, and genetically altered organisms and agents.
- COI - Conflict of Interest
The Research COI committee aims to assure that relationships with industry are ethical, do not impair professional judgment, and do not create conflicts of interest (or conflicts of commitment, as applicable) that could endanger patient safety, impair objectivity or data integrity, or damage the reputation of MedStar Health its affiliated entities or its representatives. - Individual Conflicts of Interest/Conflicts of Commitment in Research Policy
For PHS-funded research, the Research Conflict of Interest Committee will make available through a written response within five business days of the request, information concerning any financial conflict of interest identified by MedStar Health Research Institute. The response will include the Investigator’s name, title, and role in the research and the nature of the financial interest and the approximate dollar value reported in a range. The response will note that this information is current as of that date of the correspondence and is subject to updates, at least annually, and within 60 days of the Institution’s identification of a new financial conflict of interest. The information concerning the financial conflicts of interest in response to written requests will remain available for at least three years from the date that the information was most recently updated.
