Amputee Support Group at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is dedicated to ensuring excellence and high-quality comprehensive care for all our patients. In order to provide our patients with optimal long-term success, a team of dedicated experts with the same goals, and clinical expectations must work cohesively and seamlessly. Our team has perfected the integrated multidisciplinary team approach and has become a leading pioneer in the care of patients at the highest risk for limb loss. We believe that the core philosophy to achieve great results is to include the patient in every part of medical and surgical management and to periodically monitor impacts on quality of life. We strive to work towards functionality; key in increasing mobility and improving overall health outcomes.

Amputation prevention is an important part of our work. However, when an amputation is required, we want to ensure that we can provide patients who have undergone an amputation(s), ample knowledge, support, and to gauge their needs and concerns. Additionally, for those patients who are seeking second opinions, or anticipating/ expecting an amputation, this forum is ideal to proactively interact with those who have already undergone similar experiences.

Our diverse and dedicated team of Limb Salvage Experts welcomes you to join us to share your thoughts, promote and celebrate our patients, and engage in our discussions.

Wound prevention, Surgery and After Care, Cardiac Health, Exercise, Nutrition, Prosthetics, Skincare and skin products, Revisional surgery, Stump Swelling, Phantom Limb Syndrome, Stump Wounds and infections, and many more!

Our Purpose:

The MedStar Amputee Support Group aims to bring together patients who have required lower extremity amputations as a means to provide meaningful information and support to this population. The meetings are casual and offer an opportunity for amputees to interact with each other, share experiences, and ask questions that can be of tremendous benefit everyone present including family members, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals who care for amputee patients. In addition to providing helpful discussions presented by experts on the most frequently sought topics, attendees can request additional information or topic interests which can be accommodated in future lectures. In so doing, amputees, over time gain more insight and become better facilitators of their ongoing care and challenges. A secondary goal is to ensure that our team is constantly aware of the concerns and needs of this population, enabling us to become good patient advocates; a philosophy we believe strongly in.

Who Can Attend?

  • Patients who have undergone a lower extremity amputation at any level.
  • Patients who have been told that they require a major lower extremity amputation
  • Family members, friends, and caregivers to patients who have had, or will require a lower extremity amputation are encouraged to attend as well.
  • Healthcare Professionals who are interested in learning more about lower extremity amputations and the care rendered for amputees are more than welcomed to attend.
  • Finally, anyone who would like to attend for the purpose of gaining insight, who are part of other support groups related to amputee patients are welcome.
