MedStar Health has a long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare leaders. For the 2018-2019 residency year, MedStar is pleased to offer three Administrative Residency Programs:
- MedStar Ambulatory Services Administrative Residency Program
- MedStar Health System Administrative Residency
- MedStar Washington Hospital Administrative Residency Program
Detailed information about each program is included below. Each program offers one Administrative Resident position.
MedStar Health is a member of the National Council on Administrative Fellowships (NCAF), a collaboration of leading administrative fellowship sites and graduate health management programs to improve the application process and fellowship experience. As a member, all MedStar Administrative Residency Programs will follow the shared timeline set forth by the Council. The 2018 application dates are as follows:
- Application Deadline: Monday, October 1, 2018
- Initial Offer Date: Monday, November 12, 2018
Phone interviews will take place in early October. On-site interviews will take place in mid October/early November.
Candidates who have received their master's degree in health care management/administration, or business administration, or who will receive their degree upon completion of a residency, are eligible to apply for an administrative residency at MedStar Health.

MedStar Ambulatory Services (MAS) Administrative Residency
The MedStar Ambulatory Services (MAS) residency is a one-year position based within MAS. The residency will include mentorship from an executive leadership team. Project opportunities will be based throughout the Baltimore and Washington D.C. metropolitan areas. Residents will be encouraged to apply their individual background and experience in the work environment in order to contribute to the system and gain an in-depth understanding of an integrated healthcare delivery system. Project areas may include Strategic Planning, Business Development, Facility Development, Operations and Telehealth.
MAS Administrative Resident Advantages:

MedStar Health System Administrative Residency
The MedStar Health System Administrative Residency offers a unique, one-year experience in the management of a regional, not-for-profit integrated healthcare delivery system. The resident reports directly to the President and CEO of MedStar Health and is responsible for providing staff support to designated projects. The resident will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of how hospitals' operations integrate across the healthcare system and are supported by corporate services. The resident also has the opportunity to:
- Participate in high-level discussions regarding the myriad of strategic and operational issues affecting the system
- Interact extensively and develop working relationships with the MedStar Leadership Team
- Provide support to operational services projects, both at the corporate level and at various hospital and ambulatory sites
- Receive mentoring from seasoned healthcare executives
To a great extent, the residency is self-directed. Residents are encouraged to apply their individual background and experience in the work environment in order to contribute to the system while gaining an in-depth understanding of an integrated healthcare delivery system. The administrative resident is based out of the corporate office in Columbia, MD. However, the resident participates in various projects and initiatives across MedStar’s 10 hospitals and diversified organizations, including MedStar Ambulatory Services sites and Managed Care initiatives.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Administrative Residency
Established in 1982, the Administrative Residency Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center offers a one-year practicum experience in the management of a large, not-for-profit, tertiary teaching hospital. The resident reports directly to the Senior Vice President and MHVI Chief Administrative Officer, Cathie Monge. To a great extent, the residency is self-directed. The residency begins with rotational orientations in a variety of clinical and operational departments. Over the course of the year, the resident develops working relationships with MWHC’s senior management team and is afforded the opportunity to become involved in an array of special projects, many of which are based on the particular interests of the resident. Accordingly, the program may include work related to hospital operations, governance, finance, medical affairs, nursing, managed care, public affairs, information systems and ambulatory and primary care services. Furthermore, the resident also has the opportunity to gain system-level exposure through projects related to system integration, strategic planning and governance issues. Many previous residents of MedStar Washington Hospital Center still work for MedStar Health, including MedStar Health’s system President.
