Regionally and Nationally-Renowned Expertise

Our interventional radiology departments are known regionally and nationally for deep expertise in state-of-the-art imaging and minimally invasive techniques that help our patients recover with less pain and fewer risks than surgery. As one of the largest interventional radiology practices in the country, our team of experts treats a high patient volume every year. This allows us to continue delivering better outcomes for our patients.

Unlike many other interventional radiology centers, many of our interventional radiologists focus on subspecialties within interventional radiology. This allows us to hone our treatment techniques, stay up-to-date on the latest research, and provide medical advice informed by our own experiences.

Leaders in Advanced Research and Imaging Techniques

Our interventional radiology specialists are leaders in the research community. Through both lab and clinical studies, we work diligently to improve the safety and effectiveness of our treatments and develop the next generation of minimally invasive treatments.

In partnership with Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department of Interventional Radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital offers our patients the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical trials, including a trial of a new chemoembolization delivery system for liver cancer. Clinical trials provide essential information in the process of developing new technologies and ways of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease. Research participation can allow patients to benefit from the latest breakthroughs in interventional radiology care.

In addition, our research is paving the way for minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment options for men and women’s health. In fact, we were the first in the United States to conduct an FDA-approved study for treating enlargement of the prostate using minimally invasive interventional radiology approaches. And, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital experts have conducted research and published studies for more than two decades that have helped to define and improve the safety and effectiveness of uterine fibroid embolization. Our experienced team of interventional radiologists continue to publish more studies on uterine fibroid embolization than any other group in the country.

Comprehensive Care You Can Count On

We offer a wide range of interventional radiation treatments, ranging from embolization techniques to relieve pain and restore blood flow for various conditions to ablative therapies for treating complex cancers. In fact, we provide a greater number of treatment options than many interventional radiology departments, even those housed at other large research hospitals.

We also work closely with a multitude of other specialties, such as gastroenterology, oncology, neuroscience, and more to provide you with seamless and comprehensive care unique to your needs. When you receive interventional radiology care at MedStar Health, you’ll find every member of the care team focused on your best health outcome.
