About the Cardiovascular Desease Fellowship Program

Our fellowship philosophy includes training physicians to practice independently. Specialty education is centered on experience and occurs within a busy health care system.

About our hospitals

Our hospitals provide broad exposure to all areas of cardiovascular disease in an academic environment that focuses on patient-centered care. Developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes leading to proficiency in all the areas of clinical competency requires our fellows to assume personal responsibility for the care of each patient.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the largest cardiovascular referral center in the region, offering fellows the chance to treat patients who exhibit not only common, but unusual and complex manifestations of heart disease. Our program emphasizes accurate ambulatory and bedside clinical diagnosis, and appropriate use of diagnostic studies. It combines this information into a well-communicated consultation, with sensitivity to each unique patient.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a premier center of research and learning. With internationally recognized physicians, advanced research and the latest technologies, Georgetown is known for its medical excellence, leadership and education. Our faculty members encourage trainees to cultivate an attitude of scholarship, and dedication to continuing education that will remain with them throughout their professional careers.

Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a tertiary care facility that provides acute general and specialized services in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry, as well offering long-term, hospice and palliative care to our country's veterans. The medical center also has a multi-million dollar research program, where research in alcoholism, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and spinal cord regeneration is being conducted. With a staff of over 2,000, patients at the medical center are treated in both an outpatient and inpatient setting.

Clinical Research

Active participation in research projects provides the fellows with further experience in critical thinking and in evaluating the cardiology literature. The knowledge, skills and experience gained by this broad training are essential to providing a solid foundation in clinical cardiovascular medicine before trainees focus on more specialized areas. We also provide a broad clinical background with emphasis on pathophysiology, therapeutics and prevention, while highlighting the humanistic, moral and ethical aspects of medicine.

Fellows will benefit from our experienced and accomplished clinicians, and take part in ongoing active research protocols in:

  • Investigational angioplasty
  • Cardiac arrhythmia and device management
  • Echocardiography
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Acute cardiac care
  • Angiogenesis
