Name: Lew C. Schon, MD, Foot and Ankle, Orthopaedic Surgery, Program Director

Dr. Schon has been a member of GCOA since 1990 and was appointed MedStar Union Memorial's Director of Foot and Ankle Services in 2002. A graduate of Albany Medical College, Dr. Schon completed his internship in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center; his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, Orthopaedic Institute where he served as Chief Resident; and his fellowship in foot and ankle surgery under the direction of Drs. Donald E. Baxter and Thomas Clanton at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During his residency he studied under Ted Hansen at University of Washington in Seattle.

Present Position: Director Foot & Ankle Services, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital

Role in the fellowship program: As director of the fellowship, I organize and participate in the multi-dimensional educational experiences for the fellows. This includes refining clinical skills, mastering surgical technique, engaging in clinical and basic science research, learning electronic media production (data management, slide show presentations, digital photographic editing, video editing and production, and technical animations) and gaining exposure to product development (patents, intellectual property, and corporate interaction).
