Conferences - Rheumatology at MedStar Washington

The Rheumatology Fellowship includes an extensive didactic education component to complement the clinical training and support the research activities of fellows. At the start of their fellowship, trainees attend a summer seminar series, "Introduction to Rheumatology," presented jointly by faculty from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center, George Washington University, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is followed by regularly scheduled conferences including:

  • Clinical Journal Club
  • Basic Science Journal Club
  • Research Conference
  • Immunology Conference (monthly)
  • Clinical Conference
  • Clinical Walk Rounds
  • Rheumatology Grand Rounds (monthly at Georgetown Hospital - features guest speaker)
  • Fellows Conference - includes slide and literature reviews; once a month the forum is a department-wide meeting to discuss topics such as ethics and research
  • Rheumatology/Rehabilitation/Orthopedic Conference
  • Case Conference/Didactic Lecture
  • Immunological Basis of Rheumatic Diseases (NIH)
  • X-Ray Conference
  • Medical Grand Rounds (weekly, four in total are rheumatology speakers)
  • Intra-City Rheumatology Rounds (monthly)
  • Rheumatism Society of DC meetings (monthly - features guest speaker)
  • Rheumatology Fellows Forum (annually to present cases and research)
  • Washington Hospital Center Research Day (annually to present research)

The division of rheumatology also collaborates with other departments and sections to present multidisciplinary seminars such as renal/rheumatology, endocrine/rheumatology and dermatology/rheumatology. These are in addition to biopsy conferences scheduled with the Section of Nephrology, the Department of Dermatology and the Department of Pathology.

The clinical pathology department offers rheumatology fellows specialized training in the interpretation of laboratory testing. As well, rheumatology fellows attend a course on bone densitometry.

Fellows have an educational/book allowance and are supported to attend at least one major conference each year (e.g., American College of Rheumatology Spring Meeting, American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting).
