Arthur Weinstein, MD, FACP, MACR

Arthur Weinstein, MD, FACP, MACR is currently Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center, and Associate Chairman for the Department of Medicine and director of the Division of Rheumatology at Washington Hospital Center. He is board certified in rheumatology and diagnostic immunology. He has been involved in clinical rheumatology and academic rheumatology programs for more than 35 years. Prior to joining Washington Hospital Center in 2001, he was professor of Medicine and chief of Rheumatology at George Washington University Medical Center. In 2009, Dr. Weinstein was elected Master of the American College of Rheumatology, one of the highest honors the College bestows and in 2011, was elected to Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kindom.

Training, Education and Research
Dr. Weinstein went to medical school in Toronto, Canada. He trained in internal medicine and rheumatology in Toronto and at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, England. During his training, he spent two years in clinical research at the Hammersmith Hospital.

His areas of clinical research interest include Lyme disease (studies done mainly in New York), clinical and laboratory studies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and clinical trials in rheumatic diseases, especially SLE and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Dr. Weinstein was one of the first rheumatologists to study and report the use of methotrexate for RA.

He has been on the faculty of five medical schools: University of Toronto, University of Connecticut, New York Medical College, The George Washington University and currently, Georgetown University. As a director of rheumatology fellowship programs for more than 20 years, he has a long-standing interest in education and has helped train more than 75 clinical and academic rheumatologists.

Dr. Weinstein has authored/co-authored over 125 clinical and research papers and chapters. He also has been co-editor of Educational Review Manual in Rheumatology and rheumatology section editor of the online textbook, eMedicine.

Honors, Awards and Society Memberships
Awards and honors include Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Canadian Arthritis Society Fellowship Award, president of the Rheumatism Society of the District of Columbia and member of Cosmos Club, Washington, D.C. Dr. Weinstein is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He serves on the board and as chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Washington Chapter and is a member of the Committee on Appointments and Promotions at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Weinstein is recipient of the Barbara and Wm James Howard Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Washington Hospital Center (2008) and Volunteer of the Year Award, Lupus Foundation of America (2008).
